Oh well.
I do wish there was somewhere civilized people could discuss things like that.It seems when you go a "forum" that is designed for that, common sense is a rarity.Rants and raves section of craigslist is a good example.if you say something senseable, you get flagged, but the trash and dribble stays.
At least with most of this group, most that may not agree on something can explain why.

Like the Ford Barn does.

I have never fully understood why some people open a thread that is marked in the subject line "OT - Political" and then read through to the end so they can post an objection to the thread's existence on the grounds that it is off-topic and political... Duh!

Someone said at one point in the thread that it seemed very calm and polite, which I also thought. I suppose it had pretty much run its course, though.

Alot of good discussion was deleted with that thread. A thread that was clearly labeled OT, with a warning that if you did not like politics, stay out, so anyone who went there, went there by their own choice. It was very enjoyable to read the thoughts of others in a public forum just as in the ancient Roman forums, but has been censored because a few didn't like some of what was being said and complained to the one person who had the power to delete it and succumbed to their pressure. The power of the few over the many. That is the America we live in today. Get used to it. Jim Patrick

It begs the question who owns the forum. And do those that maintain it have a right to dictate content? I believe they do and it's not about free speech. People open those threads because they are curios about fellow collectors and what I read was getting personal. It is human nature to the point of the old saying we don't talk politics or religion over the kitchen table. The whole world can come here and I and want my investment in cars to grow. To do this the hobby must grow. To use the vernacular I learned here; my thoughts from a fellow collector on the left coast.
I'll be glad to meet you over here, I use Willie Krash as posting name.

Good point Mike. If it get's personal, hurtful and insulting instead of intelligent, enlightened mutual discourse, then you are correct that it might be better not to allow it to go on. I was not able to read that thread since Friday and was just getting ready to read more of it today when it was deleted, so, if it did get personal, later in the thread, I did not read that far. I didn't see where it got personal -
a few took exception to what others said but it remained civil and some of it was actually funny.

I agree with Jim's 2:19 comments about it being labeled OT - if you don't like it stay away -
and that there was a lot of good discussion.

Discussions like - Do you own an A?
What other hobby do you have?
Did you ever Wonder?
My but – and the dangers of not seeing a doctor
My vacation in the North East or South West
Where can I get a gallon Mobil 1 Racing oil can?
Even - Thank you Veterans!
etc.
Just shows that we are a community of well rounded enthusiasts that are bonded together by a common interest and we are not dull.

Although I am cautious, I can say that I'd trust most folks on the forum long before I'd trust outsiders because they seem to have moral character that is way above the norm of today's society.

One more comment –

In the current OT Model A thread Jerome Hoffman mentions the "fellowship enjoyed with being a Model T owner" –

I agree with him because fellowship means more than the vehicles - it refers to companionship, camaraderie, friendship, and friendliness.

I'm sorry to see it had to be deleted for the reasons stated...it WAS actually one of the most civil (and fun) OT to come along in a long time.

Sure most of the posts were probably from lively lefties and really righties but it stayed civil. I'd rather have access to a cross section of this group than listen to media polls, but so it goes.

I thought there was agreement a long time ago that OT with a proper topic was 'reader beware' and please pass if you think the topic may displease.

Now, on the other hand....22,000 words probably paints a whole lot of the monthly 'bit' access allowance each time it is clicked and our end of month foibles might just be that we as a group are exceeding our contract amounts with the host. In that case, I'd have no difficulty if the webmaster would have editorial discretion on ALL OT to a given word limit or 'X' days. But that's just me as a personal comment to keep the forum stable for access not trying to start anything.

Even though old car owners that are conservative, seem to be in the majority, every time a thread appears that is political in nature, disagreement is inevitable. I tried to report the facts as I saw them, but some poster took exception to my posts. I let it go and didn't retaliate, and I didn't complain to the webmaster. It wasn't my fault, so don't blame me.

I scanned the posts from time to time but didn't enjoy the thread much. In some ways I learned some but I'm not an overly educated man and it comes through on my posts. So many times I didn't understand what was being written. However I was able to keep up with enough of what was being said to assure me I made the right decision with my vote. Now if you don't mind, I'd like to start a thread regarding the influence religion should or should not have on our lives.

The past couple of weeks, I have been a little busier than usual with some family garbage. Plus I have been out of town for a few days and trying to catch up with stuff I was falling behind on. Now, I can rant with the best of them (you should have seen me an hour ago in K-Mart). I have done so on more than a few threads on this forum over the years. But I never once opened that thread! I didn't really have time to just read what I knew was going to be a long one. One of my long-time best friends even emailed me while I was out of town and told me I should at least read it after I replied back that I hadn't.
I am sorry, Dan! I guess I missed out on it.

Chris - I agree with all the others that have said how much we appreciate all you do and I'd be the last to criticize your judgement. I do have a suggestion however, that might be worth considering:

Rather than say,...."Enough is enough",.....and then we find that the thread is gone, how do you feel about saying something like,.....I feel that this "OT" thread has gone on long enough. As of tomorrow, it will be deleted,.....and follow through to delete the thread as you've said you would. This would give everybody at least a chance to read it if they wish and a "one last chance" to add a post if they wish. Just a thought,.......

In addition, I found the comments to be generally reflective of the fine caliber of Model "T" folks on this forum and proud to be, in a small way, involved in it!

Thanks again Chris,........harold

I know of one model A that made it home on the freeway with the shaft and impeller removed and a bolt stuck through the housing so it wouldn't leak. It ran along with the other cars just fine.
I noticed last week in an MGA manual it lists the cooling system as thermosyphen-water pump assisted.
There were a few hundred thousand Fords after the model A that had no water pump. The Ford Anglia flat head to name one of the more popular ones.

O.K. we have had two Jaguars and an old Frazer-Nash so I know how to deal with it. Mary drives her stick shift Jag sedan daily and in eight years we have only had $1200 in repairs so they have improved them. FOMOCO had a great deal to do with that. That's part of Michelle Obama's fight against obesity. Cars are safer and more useful than sugary products.

It was just reported that red states have higher obesity percentages than blue states, and it's growing...

I got a little concerned because I have been losing about a pound a month for the last two years, so I had a physical. Blood tests came back today, all normal. My neighbor who drags me out for a hike every morning is keeping me alive.

The other day I received this email, and expected it to be about Democrats:

DONKEY DOWN

One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally, he decided the animal was old, and the well needed to be covered up anyway; it just wasn't worth it to retrieve the donkey.

He invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They all grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone's amazement he quieted down.

A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well. He was astonished at what he saw. With each shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up.

As the farmer's neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and happily trotted off!

MORAL:
Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick to getting out of the well is to shake it off and take a step up. Each of our troubles is a steppingstone. We can get out of the deepest wells just by not stopping, never giving up! Shake it off and take a step up.

Remember the five simple rules to be happy:

1. Free your heart from hatred - Forgive.

2. Free your mind from worries - Most never happens.

3. Live simply and appreciate what you have.

4. Give more.

5. Expect less from people, and more from yourself.

That sounds good. But when they tried it in Florida, there were so few welfare recipients who tested positive that the state spent more on testing than they saved kicking druggies off the dole. Another case of legislation having unintended consequences.

It was unintended consequences for the taxpayers. It was as great for the governor's drug testing business.

Everybody pays taxes, the Middle Class more than others.

Without insurance or Medicare, Paul, you would be stuck for the full $167. The insu companies have it rigged so they get a steep discount that private pay can't get. It assures them business. That is also why the charges are so steep: so the provider can survive on the 20-30% the insu pays.

The leading cause of personal bankruptcies is medical bills.

BUT the car is a bank account waiting to be cashed in if necessary. The '27 became kitchen cabinets. I got a '23. It became new appliances and a few other necessities. Got another '23. You can guess what happened. I live in an area that isn't known for an abundance of T's but over 8 years I've found 3 in driving distance from home. There is not a material comment in this thread pertaining to Model T's!
All those who posted after Chris's initial notification (explaining why THAT thread was entirely inappropriate) are doing is wasting bandwidth the MTFCA is paying for at their own amusement
This drivel costs the MTFCA money and we get nothing from the work product.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Dick Lodge - St Louis MO on Sunday, November 18, 2012 - 07:05 pm:

Ron,

1. Chris is our webmaster and started the thread.

2. Like the last thread, it is clearly marked as being off-topic, and no one is forcing anyone else to read it. (I am especially puzzled by people who strongly object to off-topic threads and yet apparently read them through to the end in order to post their objections.)

3. How is it costing the MTFCA money? I'll admit I don't know the financial structure of the forum, but I have never thought that MTFCA is charged for its bandwidth for the forum on the basis of the number of posts. (That would seem counter-intuitive, since it would make an active forum less attractive for MTFCA than a moribund forum, and would make a forum with no posts at all the most attractive. Surely that can't be the case....)

4. I agree with an earlier post. When I go to a meeting or event of our local Model T club, we discuss Model Ts and a gajillion other things. I am spending time with people I am comfortable with, and we talk about shoes and ships and sealing wax, and cabbages and kings - plus a lot of other things as well. This forum is a gathering place for people whom I consider my friends - friends because we have an interest in common (Model T Fords), but with whom I have found that I have a great many other things in common. When I get together with friends, I talk to them about whatever comes up for discussion. I agree that I don't want to see a subject line that doesn't tell me what the thread is about, but that applies to Model T topics as well.

It doesn't all have to be Model T focused business. Chris does a great job. What he has to ride herd on can be a very difficult entity. But he pulled the pin on the political thread at the point that was appropriate. But This thread is just all of us building friendships and making our club stronger. In my view this technical Forum should be solely Model T focused. Not politics, religion or other extraneous subjects.
Apparently you did not see the extremely offensive posts on the OT Political thread before it was removed or you would not say "he pulled the pin on the political thread at the point that was appropriate". That post was racist, hateful and inappropriate on this Forum.

I have to agree with Ron and at times he and I have been on opposite sides of the fence. I'm okay with it as it was about the hobby and one can learn. Truth of the matter is that other forums that stay on topic are much more civil and not to be a broken record that allows a conversation by those interested in the hobby as lurkers are willing to join in...Let's not try to push anyone away. Not left, not center, not right, not baptist, not Catholics. Let's talk Model T's and make everyone welcome. Your investment in this hobby depends on it. It must and needs to grow.
To wit,
I was walking across a bridge one day, and I saw a man standing on the edge, about to jump off. So I ran over and said "Stop! don't do it!" "Why shouldn't I?" he said. I said, "Well, there's so much to live for!" He said, "Like what?" I said, "Well...are you religious or atheist?" He said, "Religious." I said, "Me too! Are you christian or buddhist?" He said, "Christian." I said, "Me too! Are you catholic or protestant?" He said, "Protestant." I said, "Me too! Are you episcopalian or baptist?" He said, "Baptist!" I said,"Wow! Me too! Are you baptist church of god or baptist church of the lord?" He said, "Baptist church of god!" I said, "Me too! Are you original baptist church of god, or are you reformed baptist church of god?" He said,"Reformed Baptist church of god!" I said, "Me too! Are you reformed baptist church of god, reformation of 1879, or reformed baptist church of god, reformation of 1915?" He said, "Reformed baptist church of god, reformation of 1915!" I said, "Die, heretic scum", and pushed him off. -- Emo Phillips

I agree with Ron to an extent. No politics no religion, etc. Random off topic photos added to a otherwise on topic thread tend to destroy any integrity that thread had beforehand.

It's usually the same couple people who do this. In my opinion, said people who continually stir the political pot or continue with severely OT source material should be banned as it's evident they can not take a hint when their material is removed or they are told to keep things on topic.

I can't fathom a forum such as this with very basic HTML, no elaborate skins, no advanced user profile and file size limits can use that much bandwidth.

This forum has been a great resource to me since I stumbled upon it a couple years ago. I read it more than I should(at work, on my phone at the Dr's office, etc etc)however I feel the quality of the forum has diminished due to the work of some who can't take a hint and not post political BS or derail an otherwise good thread.

Ok, how can you think that a forum that costs money would be paid for if it's a club forum and the only support for the forum comes from the club. When did anyone on this forum ever send money to the administrator to keep the thing going.

As far as religion and politics goes, forget it, I hate the subjects.

I don't like people making quotes to back their arguments because it seems they can't come up with anything intelligent to say on their own. Although I did get a chuckle out of Mike Stitts story up above but to me it was a joke and I laughed.

Ron I hear your message, and i don't have a problem with it except you have to understand this forum isn't the only place to get information. And often the information a person gets on this forum comes with so many differing opinions it's worthless. When you guys joke around about eTimers, oil, whether anyone should use waterpumps or thermostats or water vs coolant you're laughing at your own ineptitude to make this forum have any value. Actually I think people know the answer to their questions before they ask, they're just seeking agreement. And they could get that from their neighbor. The one thing this forum has got that gives it credence is it's ability to maintain a certain amount of anonymity. Therefore I don't have some "expert" standing there looking at me like I'm ignorant if I ask a question. Beyond that this is a social medium that's enjoyed by a group of people who all have something in common. And there's always the truth that, "if you don't like this thread, move along. Go to the next thread. Maybe it'll be chocked full of dry boring facts quoted out of the Ford Service Manual.

And Ron, you're right, I "did not see the extremely offensive posts on the OT Political thread before it was removed". And if someone became racist or vulgar then shame on them. Not shame on you or me, shame on them. That person was offensive, not you or me. Although I've been known to become a little vulgar too and I often wonder, actually I know someone takes offense of what I've said. But don't condemn the other users of this forum because of the mistake of one person. If you want to make this a forum strictly for Model T's, the next time Rob asks your opinion of his different christmas card photos and he doesn't have a Model T in the picture, or the next time Steve Jelf takes a photo of himself working on his roof, or the next time someone comes on here and describes their trip from Australia to Moscow, shut the thread down. And yes I know Constantine asked questions regarding the repair of his model t while on the road but that thread was more of a travelogue than anything.

I'm sorry Tom. Did you bring your paintbrush with ya? Have you seen Ol' Jim. I think the newer copies of Huckleberry Finn wouldn't be as good if it's been made politically correct. Although Ol' Jim probably appreciates it.

Herb,
That definitely describes the Somalian people that have infiltrated the population and are being given a free ride around here. It's kind of like a planned and directed comedy to go out and watch them drive. Just follow them and see how many laws they break. And then when the cops stop them, which they seldom do, they argue with them because according to them the cops have no idea how to drive on American streets. I've spent a few hours following them and laughing so hard I can't believe I didn't get picked up. I've been told they have one woman in the group that knows how to drive. She shows up and drives the car with all the hankies wrapped around her head and face and the guys giving the test don't know the difference. And from the looks of the way they drive I believe it's true. But I don't have a problem with them because they're so funny. Oh well after the lives they had before coming here I guess I don't have to hard a time with them. But watching them drive is a ball.

It's not a cliff with no recovery: it's a survivable austerity bomb.

Bring back the Reagan era tax rates..
