Adjust it as loose as it can be adjusted but still move the car without slippage. The pedal should be nearly touching the floorboard when it is adjusted properly.

Ditto the brake pedal.

That is pretty much everything you need to know.

To add to what Royce posted. I ditto everything he said, but it should also be tight enough that it won't quite touch the floorboard, so that it won't slip when it is in low gear. Either slipping from being too loose, or dragging because it is too tight is bad for the car. After you get all the bands adjusted, you should be able to turn the hand crank with the car in neutral and the car won't creep forward,or backward. And you should be able to roll the car in neutral without the engine turning. (Note, it might creep forward slightly when started after being parked a long time, but will not creep when the engine is warmed up)

I apologize Scott if I'm getting too basic here, but the fact that you're a relatively new member with few posts, maybe we need to take a step back.
The low speed band can be adjusted from the outside of the transmission under the floorboard, WITHOUT removing the inspection cover. Remove the floorboard and you'll see a threaded shaft sticking out the passenger side of the transmission. Loosen the nut closest to the transmission a little, and then tighten the shaft a turn or two until you achieve the results posted by Royce and Norm above. There's a diagram on another posting:
that shows the shaft (about a third of the way down posted by Dan Treace and instructions on how to do it).
Again, I apologize if this is more basic than you were looking for. Just wanted to make sure you knew you didn't have to open the trans.

on the subject of bands, i am a realitively new model Ter as well and have purchased my first T. the car has not ran in 15 or 20 years. I have already put a new ignition system on it and im slowly working through it. the bands that are on it right now are just as thick as a new set of bands that i purchased. do we think they are okay? or can i at least put a few miles around the block with em?

Nathan, if you are taking the engine and transmission down before you run it, I would put the new bands on while it is all opened up. If you are not opening it up, I would try the bands that are in it first before changing them. They might be fine. Especially if there was still oil in the engine when you brought it home. If you have to adjust them a couple of times after running it a short time, then it could be a sign that they are coming apart and need replaced.
