Looks like your coupe has clinchers. The sidewall blowout could be due to cutting from a sharp rim. There are a lot of rims that have sat with tires on them for years out in the weather. The part of those rims nearest the ground gets wet for long periods, especially when they've sunk into the dirt, and they rust sharp. Here's a severe case.

Derusting and painting doesn't fix this. When the sharp rim cuts through you hear a loud bang and end up like this:

You didn't say whether the separated valve stem was in front or back, but I'd suspect it was in the back and the tire slipped on the rim. Try 65 psi.

If you 30 x 3 1/2 inch tires then Steve is right you should be running 65 LBS especially in the back

Tire

Wonder how old the tires were. Even though they may 'look' good after 50 yrs. the rubber gets hard and stiff.
When they get used again on the road they are a good candidate for a blowouts.

I've had these on my car since 1979 and they're still in good serviceable condition, they still have their inspection stickers on them. These are Canadian Goodyear's and haven't been made since the 50's.
