I have my first model T...1919 Touring that I'll be working on all winter. My question is, what shade of green was used on my Model T ? I'm thnkin its dfferent than what i have on my Model A. I have a Langs, Snider and Mac's parts books but they just list the paint for 26-27 T's ...the same as Model A's.
I should have said what shade of green on the engine...duhh...sorry !
The 1919 would have been unpainted or maybe brushed with a tar-based black wash. It seems to be assembly plant dependant. Most folks just paint them black or cast color. The green wasn't used until very late 26 and 27 so very few of the 26s would have been painted green.
I should have mentioned that would be the engine block and head. Other parts of the engine were painted or dipped with black. The transmission cover remained unpainted but most use a cast color for rust protection. Still others dress them up like a clown car. Unless you're striving for a points car, there's a lot of free will complacency on this forum.
Thanks Ken ! Guess I'll do black.
I think a black satin finish looks nice.
By the way, any relation to the Gregorys in Eastern Oklahoma? (Joe Gregory)
Ken, not that I know of...could be ? If his family came from East Tn or Western NC then there is a good chance.
My 2nd '23 had 4 coats of paint on the eng/trans. 2 shades of green, a grey primer-like color, (Lord knows where that came from) and finally a kind of thinned black. More like a wash than a coat of paint. According to here that's what I stayed with.
The owner started restoring the car but passed away in 1982. It sat in a barn until a few months ago when i bought it. He painted the body what looks like "hunter green" and the engine a different shade of green. The body paint is in good shape so I'll just leave it as is. I just pulled the engine to check things there...hope all go's good with that...but will paint it satin black before it go's back in.
Back many years ago, maybe the late fifties-early sixties, the MTFCI adopted a "gray-green" paint(Martin Senour?) for the "official" engine paint. Where they came up with that, I never understood, even back then when I was a kid. Hard to tell how many T's were messed up with that engine paint. Dave
I know the body color should be black...but that green looks pretty good ! Thanks for everyones help..I'll be needing more as the months go by.
