G'day,
Driving the '23 yesterday, she felt a little sluggish on the hills but pulled them without too much trouble. Then she just cut out on a down hill run. I stopped and she started up straight away and continued as before, still a little sluggish on the hills. As I got home and went for low she stalled, then fired again coughing and then backfired so hard she leveled the muffler and would not run on mag and rough on battery. I have not looked at her as yet, will start the process of elimination tonight.
Check to see if your fuel supply screen is clear and check the gas tank for rust and crud. You may have a reduced fuel flow or blockage. Make sure the small air hole in the fuel cap is open.
Peter - To add a bit to what Dennis suggested, do you use some type of fuel filter? Filters such as a sediment bowl with very fine mesh screen works well, however, some paper element type fuel filters can cause problems such as those you have described.
The "backfires" might indicate an intermittent" ignition switch----or ignition wiring.
worth checking......
Good Luck---paul
G'day Everyone,
Found the problem. Bloody plastic coils!!! These have only done about 800 miles were tested and adjusted on a Strobo Spark and found to be OK. Pulled them out and tested again, found shorts and faulty caps. This rubbish should be pulled from sales and sent back to the manufacturer so others don't get caught. Be warned, don't use these, more trouble than their worth. I put some untested old coils back in and the car ran smoother and no backfiring. cleaned and set them up on the Strobo spark and she runs better than ever. I will be getting a rebuilt set of coils for my '26 project soon. Glad that I had this failure now and not after I unknowingly got another set of crap.
Peter
There will continue to be crap sold, as long as people by crap.
We should send a message, and not purchase crap....
How old were those #### plastic coils. I have heard they make them better now. But, then, I have been hearing that for over forty years now since I was talked into buying two of them for my first T. They both failed too soon.
Thank you for the heads up. Good luck!
Drive carefully, and enjoy, W2
G'day Wayne,
The coils are no older than 18 months. I got them as the wooden ones were not available at the time. I now am the proud owner of six of the bloody things. Am going to lone them up at the pistol range at 25 yards and try for six out of six.
Peter
OOP's Should be line them up.
