Took this on my trip towin' T back to SoCal. On the way to the Jelf Estate/farm/hooch in eastern part of Kansas just over the Kansas line. Forgot the name of the town, but I just know Steve does.

Looks familiar, but I'm not sure. Baxter Springs? Chetopa? Coffeyville? Next time I'm over that way I'll watch for it.

That building was obviously built when there were "service" stations. The actual architecture of the building is from a time where people cared about their image. Remember going in to get gas and the guy pumping it would lift the hood on your car. And they would always check the oil. They'd wash the windshield off. If you asked them to they'd pull the caps off the battery and look to see if the level of the electrolyte was correct. Or you could ask them to check the tires. I remember my Grandmother being very impressed because my friend that worked at the Standard station had checked out her drivers door because it was squeaking when she opened and closed it. And when they were done you paid them with a ten dollar bill. Now you stop at a convenience store and pump your own gas. If you have to go inside to pay for it you handed the money or your credit card to some tattooed, pierced, green haired freak on the other side of bullet proof glass. And a tank of gas costs $75.00. And they call it a "convenience store". How's that for some brainwashing.

This must be the original gas station owner's house. It was located just catty-corner from the station

What's the difference between "kitty corner" and "catty corner"?

I checked Google maps and found that station's in Chetopa. It's typical Sinclair station architecture of the thirties. You see them all over this part of the country. Here's the one in Arkansas City.

I was going to buy this one about 15 years ago, but couldn't afford the house that went with it:
