I am detailing my engine compartment in my 1922 T Pickup and I am wondering what the correct color should be for my engine and transmission. I just plan on going to local shows with it but I do like it to be orignal anyway.

Engine color is a debate point - some info indicates engines were left unpainted, other info details the engine color as a thin black gilsonite varnish that likely was gone early in the car's life. Nowadays we don't want our treasures to rust, so it's best to paint it black with modern paint - it would likely look like the day it was new, but not deteriorate as fast as they did back then.

Im guessing that it would be a semi gloss color right? Or more of a flat black?

Semi gloss or flat black would both be good, I think - one representing a car just as the day it was delivered, the other as it appeared after a few months :-)

Here's an interesting part of Trent Boggess long article in the encyclopedia:
"A final example of using dipping to paint a Model T part was the crankcase. While dip painting the crankcase assembly may not in itself be remarkable, the paint that was used is. This paint was F-142 Black Slush Paint. It was probably the fastest air drying paint used in the Ford Motor Company, and it certainly was the simplest in composition. It was made from 50% Gilsonite and 50% petroleum spirits (paint thinner). Crankcases were dipped in this material and would air dry in an hour or less. Parts painted with F-142 would have appeared to be “dense black” in color, but probably not very glossy or shiny."

After stripping 3 other colors from my '23 I came down to the "wash" black Roger mentions. Hard to describe beyond almost a paint. More like a dye. You could kind of see through it. No gloss or sheen at all. I went with high temp gloss black.

The factory slushing compound, loosely referred to as "paint," was very shiny when first applied but quickly dulled, so a semi-gloss is probably closest to what it looked like when it came off the line.
