I just saw this on the internet:
http://photoblog.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/11/21/15332545-volcano-erupts-in-new-zea lands-lord-of-the-rings-park?lite
It says it was a sparsely populated area and no one was hurt.
I wish well to all our New Zealand friends.
Herb
Thanks Herb. It appears that it was little more than a "burp" compared with some we have had in the past. The Aussies call us the "Shaky Isles" for good reason I guess. The "Hobbits" have all gone to ground.
I see that's mid North Island........isn't it a bit (a LOT) unusual for that sort of event on North Island?
Craig,
have a look at Wikipedia, List of Volcanoes in NZ., http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_volcanoes_in_New_Zealand
all of the major volcanoes are in the NI.
Only 3 or 4 show any signs of activity but there are hundreds of dormant ones. The most obvious is lake Taupo in the NI and Banks Penninsular in the SI
I have a friend in Masterton, south end of North Island. He never mentioned anything about volcanoes so it surprised me........
We don't take too much notice of them.
The ash becomes a nuisance occasionally but only in that they can't fly planes through the ash clouds. Some airports get closed for a while depending on which way the wind is blowing.
The businesses in the vicinity are doing a moan at the moment because the tourists are cancelling out but I expect everything to be back to normal again within a few days.
Gavin
Thought it was about time that the North had its turn of seismic activity considering what the south has had of late. Hopefully it will clear up and settle back into its normal routine soon.
P.S still away but haven't forgotten about my email to you.
Cheers Simon
Is there a North Island?
Isn't that the island that drains all our power resources and our "strong" south island economy.
Sent by my iPad while sitting at Melbourne airport and thinking about my Bendigo purchases lol
Gavin, I was kind of concerned about you, as it appears on the map that you live rather close to that volcano area.
There was a north island 10-15 years ago but what the orclanders didn't ruin the zombies did. There were no survivors.
I was on the 2012 New Zealand Re-Enactment Run of the "1912 3 Men in a Model T Ford 3-7 November Wellington to Auckland."
On the 8 November driving back to Wellington, we were re-routed around Turangi through National Park and these are some of the photos I took of the mountain concerned in the eruption on the 21 november 2012 photos to follow

Jim,
Thanks for your concern but I'm far enough away to not have to worry about it. This was the smallest of burps. They are looking to open up a major part of the mountain to tourists again Thursday of this week.
Kep: Nice looking country, the picture where you were passing through the cut was interesting !!!
