Here is a no brainer wheel fixture I use. Takes about a minute to set up, with two 'C' clamps, and a piece of 1/2 inch rod.
I've seen a fancier version using an old barbecue spit to turn the wheel. I need to watch for one at auctions.
What's the black plate vehicle?
The pickup has Chevrolet tail lights.
It would be my luck the wheel would slide off the end and roll out through garage door, through the freshly cut grass and out into the weeds. And, of course, after the final coat of paint had reached the tacky state.
Ken - That would be my luck also. I'm planning on making a wheel fixture like this, but I'll thread the end of it and put a nut and large washer on either side of the wheel so the wheel doesn't fall off.

Here is what I did when I was restoring our Fordor.

Hmm, a "4 in 1" set up! Here's what I did: I have an old swing set frame and I hang wires from it with a piece of conduit. Trouble is, it's one wheel at at time this way. For the Ford metal spoke wheels I have a bearing with an elongated plate that can be tipped into the hub cap hole, and catches each edge. It has a large bolt through it with a hole through which I run a wire and hang it. With this set up, you can paint a wheel, hold it by the inside of the rim, lift it off and set it on a can (so it doesn't touch anything on the outside, and start on another wheel.
Here's the Wood spoke set up.
Nice wheels!. Those are almost too nice to put into use....
Steve: The pickup in the photo is my trusty old '41 Chev. It's a great old truck, and has way over 100,000 miles, and runs like a top. It is my modern old car!
You can find your C-clamps??!!! That's a two-day setup for me.
Organization is not my strong suit. In fact, organization just might cause a fellow to accomplish too much. At least that's what I keep telling my boss. Luckily, she knows I just like "poking the beast".
Warren, I know all about the organization challenge. When my ship comes in I'm going to hire somebody to follow me around and keep track of what I do with things.
I just stuck a dowel in my table-vice.
That worked out just fine for the rear wheel I was refinishing, but setting up a fixture that won't harm the ball bearing races in the front wheels is going to be more of a challenge. Not sure how I'm gonna handle that.
I just tie my friend to the fender and hand her a brush while I drive slowly down the road. She know that if she messes up the paint job I'll just cut the rope that is holding her on.

Good Answer LOL
I took an old axle and wired it to an outfeed roller which happened to be in my shop. You could attach an axle to most anything and get the same result.
Steve - I hope my ship comes in before my dock rots!
great idea for the painting of wheels,l'll be adopting those ideas very soon.
