I 'm in need of a grade 8, 1/2", 20 TPI bolt. Anybody know where I might buy just one?
I'm guessing you already did a Google/Bing search and found they don't exist off the shelf. Something like that is low volume or special order. They'll probably run $20-$40 each, depending on length, in lots of 10. Do the math.
Choices:
1. Change the design.
2. Make it yourself.
3. Have a friend make it.
4. Pucker and order 10.

Last time I went to Fastenal they refused to sell me anything but full boxes, haven't darkened their door since!

Our local hardware store has them.
What length do you need?
I'll get one and send it to you.

OOPS!
I screwed up!
Just noticed the LEFT HAND THREAD!
Forget that previous post.
Sorry.
Bob
Fastenal doesn't have many left hand thread fasteners at all either. As I said, G8 1/2"-20 LH is not a common bolt. Perhaps if we knew more about the application an alternative might work. Like a common wheel stud in LH thread. Those come in LH 1/2"-20 and nearly all are grade-8 or above.
If you know someone with a lathe, cut down a longer standard G8 1/2" and thread the upper part in left hand thread. Long bolts will have an un-threaded section under the head.
Try searching the web. There must be 30 or more sites available. I agree with Steve, McMaster-Carr or McMaster is a very good source. Good luck.
well, i believe that fastenals are independently owned and operated so i guess we have a friendly one we also have a mom and pops hardware store that is top notch. they have everyyy thinggg
Nathan,
PATRONIZE that hardware store, so they can stay in business. That's a really rare commodity today. In the next town over (Chico) is one, Collier's Hardware, been there over 100 years, and when I was doing my '16 T frame, they had the rivets! (of course you had to know to whom to ask & where the "good stuff" is hidden. I suspect there's still some T accessories in the basement, but that's sacred ground, and I've only been down there once & only got to look in one spot (I forget what I was looking for!)

PS, I believe re-threading a longer bolt, or modifying a wheel lug is Bob's best bet.
McMaster-Carr lists left hand, but only 1/2-13, and only 4 1/2" long. They can often get something not listed, but you have to ask them. All grade 8 fasteners for sale today will have rolled threads.
Any 1/2-20 cut thread won't make the grade, if that is important to you.
Grade 8 simply means 150,000 psi minimum tensile strength.
You could try getting a bolt that is longer and the grade you need and ether turn it on a lathe or find a left hand die.
U don't say how long & end use --
how-ever ,, early jeep - used 1/2 x 20 tpi lug nut & bolt
left hand thread on driver side
i've have lots of right hand on the shelf but no left's

I picked this up at the scrap yard, but someone took off the 12 inch blade. The bolt and washer was no where to be found. IR says the bolt is out of stock with no production date. Their price was $43.00 for the bolt and the washer, which they have in stock, is $243.00. The bolt is about 1.25 long 1/2 X 20. The retail price of the saw was $3,399.00. Thanks for all the help, I'll probably never use this thing, but it will look good in the auction scheduled for 12 after the funeral at 10.
Thats a wheel stud with a hand ground hex head job. Did you even try Ingersoll for the bolt? troop
Try Milwaukee too as they have a 12" left side blade worm drive unit like the I-R one here.

You can get a foot of 1/2-20 LH all thread, per ASTM A193 B7, for less than ten bucks. No doubt they would have a LH nut you could put on permanently. This will be somewhat less capable than Grade 8.
Maybe this McMaster-Carr link will actually take you to that item.
