On the tailshaft there is .015 play in the pins that hold it to the flat plate. Is this acceptable or does it need to be replaced or repaired?
By looking at the clutches I assume they should be replaced or are they OK?

If you mean the rivets that hold the tail shaft to the drive plate, no it should be replaced. Not sure if over sized rivets can be gotten from the dealers for this part, you might want to check. That would be your other choice but there would be a lot involved.

It's hard to tell if the clutch discs are ok from the picture - clean them and check them carefully for cracks. If plane and not cracked they should work.

The tailshaft rivets to the driven plate should be tight and solid. If loose, you should drill the old rivets out and rerivet - the right style rivets are available: http://www.modeltford.com/item/3325RIV.aspx

Here's a thread discussing reriveting transmission parts: http://www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/257047/286433.html?1336139245

Jim, also only use discs that are flat as warped ones will cause the car to creep when in neutral and can cause jerky engagement.

You should not need oversize rivets. Installing new rivets will fix the problem.

To quote the thread discussion above (Roger on Saturday):

"Ford used a hydraulic press. If you have the time and the equipment that is the best way."

And then:

"If you were going to use a press, how large (how many tons) would you need?
My 12 ton probably wouldn't manage, would it?"

I would also recommend you have the driveplate magnafluxed since it is loose to the rivets.
They tend to crack between the holes as well as in the finger bosses.
