I don't believe there was a model J for a T. If it is for a 1917, I would recommend a 100, since a speedometer wasn't offered that year anyhow. It would use a standard Stewart setup, with a 2 1/2-1 swivel.
Richard Landes:
A model J is correct for a 1917. Your friend will need a 60 tooth/8 pitch road gear. and a 16 tooth/ 8 pitch driven gear. Finding heads are easy I have bought as many as 12 at a time at Chickasha. Finding the correct and working swival is the difficult part.
Stewart (later Stewart Warner) never made a "Model J" speedometer. The typical Stewart speedometer for a Model T from 1915 - 19 would be a Model 100 or 102. The serial number of every Stewart Speedometer has a date code preceded by a letter.
G = 1915
H = 1916
J = 1917
K = 1918
