My SCR has kicked in again (or has never left).

Can I install a new modern timer oil seal (CR9843)by removing the timer, roler and old style felt and just press the new seal in its place, or is there more that I'm not remembering.

Bob

That is pretty much it. If it is loose(some are) you could add a little sealer around the out side before putting it in the timer plate. You didn't mention the pesky shield, and I hope you have already thrown it away.

Yes. You might want to clean the recessed area and use a little silicon to hold it in place. Some holes fit the seal nice, other are a little one the loose side or you could squish the sides a little to increase the outside diameter.

Depending on the year of the timer cover it might not accept the seal at all since there is no recess for the seal to install into.

Thanks guys,
My CRS didn't go away but I understand what your saying. Now I can put it to work.

Jack
It's still in there but the garbage can lid is off and waiting.

I had to put about a .010" shim for a spacer all around the modern seal to get it to go in tightly. Used gasket goo on it also.

My engine rebuilding buddy Tony Verschoore used to place the modern seal on the top of a carefully selected craftsman socket used as an anvil and tap the seal with a small hammer to swell it up to fit. It basically tapered the perimeter of the seal enough to then be able to drive in place. He always used a little loctite too as I recall.
