Hi! I want to remove the coils from a Magneto so I can Powder Coat the frame. (For making a Hand Crank Coil Tester.) I plan on cleaning the coils up and re-appling them to the Frame Work. What is the best way to remove them. Also what is a good way to reattach them? I still want the magneto to function as a back up if need be. Thanks Larry

They should just lift off. Powder coating may be too thick to get them back on. I would suggest masking off the top and sides of the spools.

Heat from the back side of each coil will make it easy.

Thanks Mark and Jack! I was planning on masking what was not to be coated. I never thought about the heating. I'll give it a try tomorrow and let you know how it turns out. Larry

Lots of times the centers pull out and they unwind when they are pulled off. Watch out. You may want to look at e-coating the ring instead of Powder coat. It is a lot thinner. Dan

If these coils have the original insulation, I would doubt that you can remove them without destroying it. If they were rewound with fiberglass tape, it might be possible. Why not just clean it up real good and use some black paint either spray on or brush on?

Even masking tape would pull off the original insulation. It is usually very fragile.

The Rain stopped me today as I was looking for an extension cord. I just needed to unsolder the ground and the output contact. Had my Map Torch and butter knives ready to pry them off and it poured down. Had to put it all away. I'll try again when it is through raining. If the coils don't come off easy then I'm not taking them off. Its a working Magneto. I just wanted to clean it up and paint it for my Hand Crank Coil Tester DIY Project. I'm building the base right now for it. I just thought removing the coils was a routine thing that can be done. Larry

Larry
When you first posted your plan to remove the windings from an original field ring I envisioned the scene in Toon's photo above.
It may be a bit more expensive, but I suggest buying a rebuilt field ring and paint it with a brush or spray bomb. It works and looks great when done.
Here is a photo of one done that way.

I really like you HCCT. Especially the arrangement for gap adjustment.

Can these things get too "purty"? Thinking of Dean Yoder's recent pic of 2 HCCT's on what appears to be his coffee table in his living room and what the results of me trying something like that would be!!

Ron : You had the possibility to see my HCCT in real, maybe next time .This HCCT cost a lot less as an old one only two days work , and works the same I think .

You can just take the nuts off to remove the coils if you have a 1912 or earlier coil ring.

Wow! Those coils look like they won't come off without a fight. That was not what I wanted! I kinda thought that using a heat gun would just loosen it up and slide off. I'm sure glade I asked for some advice. I'll just clean off the oil and spray Paint it. I will still Powder Coat the Base/Frame. I already bought all of that stuff to do it with. Thanks for the help. Larry
