Before removing the engine from my 1919 Touring I was pushing on the hand brake and could hear a "clunk" sound. I now have the engine out and can push and pull on the trans and the whole unit along with the flywheel will move in and out a bit. I have a model A but very new to the model T..I'm sure there shouldn't be any movement..what am i looking at here ?

Worn third main bearing cap. This provides the thrust surfaces for the crankshaft. Needs to be replaced and then check clearance between magnets and coils.

How much is a bit? A little bit is OK. A large bit is a problem. I can't remember the exact amount, but probably 0.003 is OK. I am away from my Ford repair manual.

Its more than 0.003.. I'd say its much more. I may have bitten off more than i can chew ! I do have another hogshead, flywheel with ring gear and newly charged magnets that i plan on using because the car came without a starter.

All those parts won't help with a bad third main. You will have to add some babbitt to the third main and recut the thrusts.
