I would like to point out that the pictures that David posted are for a '25, but will work on earlier cars as well. Note the two dimples in the part. They were added in 1924 to support the added weight of the new style tailight assembly. The small hole in the top is for the tailight wire bushing. The carrier for the 21" rims is similar, but entirely different.

I believe you will find the dimples were added earlier than '25, but were moved in 25 to a more centered position (note they are offset). The earlier brackets did not have two folds on the rear angle at each end. I may have a better picture of this, I can look later.

They started adding the new style tailight to that carrier for the '25 model year in Oct '24.
I just checked an extra spare tire carrier I have, and the tailight bushing wire hole is 6 1/2" in from the left side. The one you have toward the middle was probably added later. Hope this helps.

My '24 with the tail lamp license holder on the tire carrier,

I remember reading somewhere that the muffler exhaust and its heat harm tires mounted on rear spare tire carriers. Is that true? The reason I ask is that my Runabout came to me with the spare tire carrier mounted on the driver side running board. Seems the car would look nicer with the spare mounted on the rear, but if the muffler exhaust and heat harm rear mounted spare tires, then I suppose I will keep the spare tire carrier where it is.

I think if you put on a after market exhaust deflector this problem would be resolved if in fact that was a problem. I have a 30.5" carrier and need a 21".

The deflector is a good idea. Thanks.

Is there a difference between the license holder that attaches to the spare tire carrier and the later one that is mounted on the left rear fender?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By David Martin on Thursday, December 06, 2012 - 09:15 pm:

Jerry, To my knowledge, they are the same bracket. I have not confirmed that by looking at drawings though. The 26/7 tail light / license plate mounts to an intermediate bracket that then mounts to the fender. The tail light bolts to this bracket using the same (2) bolts that are used to bolt it to the earlier carrier.

One difference of the reproductions to the originals is the lack of the ford script on the metal holder for the lens.

David, I see that they look the same but Lang's catalog list part number 8786BX for 1924/25 and 8786CX for 1926/27. Also there is a price difference. Could there be mounting angle difference?

The 8786CX is the light with the fender mounting bracket attached. The 8786BX is just the light without the bracket. The same light is used from 25 - 27.

One other thing to watch out for with the spare tire carriers is that there are two different length arms which attach the carrier to the frame. I'm not sure what length goes on what body, but I'm pretty sure the touring uses different length arms than the Coupe.
