You may read about the problem with some generator field windings being formed backwards and require that you NOT cross the field pigtails before connecting them to the brush holders?
In a correctly wound and formed field winding you MUST cross the field pigtails per standard procedure prior to connecting them.
In an incorrectly formed field winding you MUST NOT cross the field pigtails before connecting them otherwise the generator will not charge because the pole shoe polarity will be backwards.
I took a photo of both field winding types, annotated them and am posting here so you can identify what you have.

Ron, couldn't a person pass a little dc current through each coil and with a compass determine whether the coil produces a north or a south at the pole face? You would want to have coil number 1 be a north (doesn't matter if north or south) then coil 2 be a south, #3 north and #4 a south. They need to alternate polarity. I think that this test would really tell the tale.

A question for you Ron, genny related, just checking that every thing is working on a 26 T that I had bought, I have 10amps at revs, also with a volt check at the regulator, battery side, I have 8.2 volts (8 volt battery) but the genny side is pumping out over 14volts, is that normal?
Next Question, I pull the earth off the battery when finished playing but I had left the volt meter still hooked up on the genny reg, it was showing a 2 volt reading, cleaned all around the battery top and terminal, sprayed with wd40 and cleaned again, no strap or metal with in 1.5" of the battery post but still the 2 volt drain, pulled the positive off and no volts, could the battery casing be thin enough to make a circuit for leakage? repeated the cleaning and testing some 14 hrs later, still the same.
Mike
Yes of course that can be done, but this is for the non electrically inclined where a picture is worth a thousand words.
You are electrically inclined. The windings are alternately wound and as you can see when you install the lower field in the photo the polarity of each pole shoe will be reversed.
The fields MUST be in the proper N-S sequence when installed inside the generator case because of the position of the brushplate with respect to the armature and pole shoes.

The very best tip on Generators is to box it up and send it to Patterson. Let him rebuild it and send back, pay the bill, and meantime you can get a bunch of other things done.
