For Carol, I finally restored her 1909 Van Dorn Iron Works hotel lobby letter box. It came from some large fancy, old hotel in San Diego that was torn down in the early 70s. I wish I had taken a "before" pic. This thing looked awful.
The blue looks a little bright but that's an artefact from the flash. I finally burned out my 12 year old, Harbor Freight dremel tool polishing the brass card-holder on the front.
It'll take a steadier hand than mine to paint the letters white. I'll prob commission a local artist to finish that part after the first of the year.
The rest of her gifts are tucked away inside...
I will be giving a ride for some tractor sheet metal and a car from Iowa to Anaheim, CA ...
I might visit Disneyland ....
Merry Christmas !
Jim
Merry Christmas Jim! I haven't been to Disneyland in 35 years. We went during the 25th anniversary celebration. Loved every minute I was there and would do it again, given the chance.
Who doesn't like Space Mountain??
Disneyland is so nice. Several years ago I attended a full weeks symposium on Reliability Engineering at a Hotel about a block from Disneyland. On about the third day of sitting in that hall and listening to that boring self-proclaimed expert on Mean Time Between Failure and Failure rates and Exponential Distributions and... Well you get my drift. I left at noon and went to Disneyland and walked around by myself. I was shocked to find out how much smaller is is than Disney World but I still enjoyed it. Then I went to the bar in the Hotel across the street from mine. That week was the week of some kind of music awards and there were all kings of 80's hair band rockers in there and I sat and drank a coke and talked to the drummer from some band. When I got home and told my son about it he about lost his mind. Apparently he knew who the band was. I didn't.
Oh and for Christmas; I don't know. I think I might go to one of the coin dealers in town and buy an old silver dollar. Try to find something from pre-twentieth century so it's a silver coin instead of a "sandwich" coin. Then I'm going to put it into something special, I haven't decided what just yet and I'll throw it in with the rest of the gifts that we shake dice for and that's it. Then maybe if I see my granddaughters this winter I might take them to the store and let them pick something out. Merry Christmas.
Danial it is called Paint Pens from the craft section of Walmarts or a good art craft store.
Allows people like me to hilite raised letters.
Gift cards for gifts this year.
I made pens and gave them last year and they were a big hit.I was planning to make some other stuff but just never got around to it.Like a couple pepper grinders and the 4 way screwdriver kits you can buy to make with a wood lathe and stuff.
Danial,
Nice gift there for your ' Christmas Carol ' ...
Beats the h*ll out of a diamond ....
Jim
Paint pens! Heck yeah....thanks Mack. I even sell those where I work...looks like it's time to demo one...hahaha
And I learned the name of the hotel, and it is still there - the Grand Del Mar in San Diego. Quite the resort...looks way too rich for my blood.
I'm giving my boy a framed photograph I took at Toomers Corner after Auburn's National Championship win...signed by Cam Newton. We didn't play football this past season.....so 2012 is kinda dry.....
What will I be giving for Christmas? Money, as usual.
Hey Halpin...If your giving money my address is....
Merry Christmas!
Memberships in both MTFCA and MTFCI plus a gift certificate from Lang's for my brother-in-law.
I just built a computer to give to a friend of mine. He had a near fatal accident that broke his neck in 12 places. He has been a quadraplegic ever since. I gave him a computer many years ago and he discovered a whole new pass time. He has become quite good at digital photography. The new computer is much faster and will allow him to progress to video editing. Sometimes you need a slap in the face to realize just how good you have it...Merry Christmas Steve !!
This year, our extended family adopted a single mother and two kids. We made sure they would have plenty of food, clothing and toys, so that they could enjoy this season too.
That is what it is about Ross !!
Good for you.
Being this is our 25th anniversary, I offered a promise of 25 more years and a future life in paradise on the beaches of Ecuador for 2013 and beyond.
