Model T Ford Forum: Forum 2012: Found a use for a tyre flap

Today I had to fit a tyre damaged by a novice when he removed it from the rim. The partly broken bead had left a ridge which may have chafed the tube, so I fitted it with a flap to prevent this.

Flaps are not needed normally. I use a rim liner cut from the outside diameter of a 13" tube, given away by tyre fitters and wreckers.

These are a stretch fit on a 23" rim.

They sit neatly in the base of the rim and never get out of place when levering a tyre on.

I fit the tube into the tyre first, inflated just enough to hold its shape.I use the tyre lube the pros use to make the job easier. Then I put the two sides of the tyre into the rim and use the clamp as a third hand to hold it in place at the valve stem.

It is a simple job to lever both sides of the tyre at the same time. At the end one side will slip on first and the it is easy to lever the last little bit on.

Job done.

This is all done on a folding table at waist height. That table is one of the best pieces of equipment I have. With a stiff tyre, I can tuck one lever in my armpit and still have two hands free to work two more levers. These levers have a neat little curved end which rolls closely around the bead on the rims so there is little chance of pinching the tube on that last little.

Hope this helps.

i like your rim liner idea! any tricks on how to cut the tube? I imagine thats tough to keep two straight lines?

I like the way the clamp is used. Think I will try that the next time I change a tire, It would be like an extra hand.

Second the idea on the clamp use. Valve stem always out of alignment when tire/tyre was finally on. I fitted a removable wooden top on my home made welding table for such use.

I use tire flaps on all my cars like my dad before me. I think it is harder to pinch a tube when flaps are used and they also cover the rim that may have some rough spots. Just my thoughts.

Nathan, most tubes have mould lines around them to use as a guide for your scissors. It takes about 5 minutes to cut a liner.

Willie, I have nothing against using flaps. My Scots heritage means I am averse to spending the money a set of flaps costs when rim liners can be had for nothing. In the last photo you will see the levers I use to fit tyres. You would almost have to be trying to pinch the tube to be able to get that neat curved end to do it. That curve follows the rim so closely. The rim liner does exactly what a flap will do as far as protecting the tube from rough spots on the rim.

Hope this helps, and saves you all a good few dollars.

What you have made is a "rim liner". It is usually used for wire spoke wheels. The part we call a "flap" goes inside the tire between the two sides of the tire and the tube. The flap is then completely within the tire when the tire is placed on the rim.

I like your clamp idea. I plan to use one the next time I install tires.

Norman, the flap was used in another tyre altogether, to protect the tube from some damage to the bead of the tyre.
The photos are indeed of a rim liner and how i fit tyres usually.

You could be causing trouble by putting the liners far across into that position.

A beaded edge tyre drives the wheel around by the flat section of the tyre that is pressed against the rim . YOU HAVE PUT THE FLAP IN THAT DRIVE SECTION which could well cause MOVEMENT between the rim and the tyre and eventual cause the beaded edge to be cut by movement .
