Any ideas or hints on removing grease and rust with electrolysis ? Does it work ?
I did a lot electolysis over the summer. I think the grease might act as an insulator and not work right. The rust comes off fine. I even had paint come off in large pieces.
I'm in the process of stripping some tailights using electrolysis...works great. Grease, I think - wouldn't be a part of this effort...I'd remove that, beforehand.
I have had pretty good luck removing rust and grease at the same time with electrolysis. The electrolysis seems to loosen the hard grease that can be difficult to remove. Pressure washing after the soak in the electrolysis tank really works good.

Anyone have a plan for building such an apparatus?
Chuck,

chuck go to antique engines.com That site has diagram of one, click on Rust removal by electrolysis.
Thanks, Charlie....good site. I'm gonna build me one of them things.

I set up one last summer. Wish I'd have done it when I first heard about it. Works great. Scrounge around and see if you can come up with a golf cart battery charger. Mine is 36 volt at 40 amps. It will cook the grease, rust and paint off anything. I bought a 100 gallon rubbermaid tank. It's frozen solid now, winter and all that. If you can't find the Arm and Hammer washing soda, they have an 800 number you can call and they will tell you the closest store that carries it. Throw a cup or two of salt in with the washing soda and it will work better. I used two eighteen by eighteen iron plates for the annodes or cathodes, whichever they are. Took the paint and rust off a set of wire wheels in two days. They were nasty. Pressure washed them and they looked great. I spray stuff with some goop called Gibbs. Keeps it from rusting and you can still paint over it. After you get the rust off with electrolosis you can sandblast for a gorgeous finish. I'd post a picture of my Pasco wire wheels I did the electro/sandblast to. They turned out gorgeous.
I too set one up last summer. My family and friends called me the mad scientist. It looked like I was making a frankenstein or something. Have fun.
