Good question. Maybe somebody in the know can come up w/some good answers.
There are dippers on the rods of my '27 but the caps are not drilled, and the caps are not X'ed. I've often wondered about this. I guess the dips will splash a lot more oil around, whether that's good or not I don't know. Other than that I don't have a clue.

Dippers serve no purpose if the rod cap is not drilled. Without the hole, the dipper has no way to force the oil into the rod. The X-grooving gives the oil someplace to go and acts as a resevior once it is forced up through the hole in the rod cap. Just make sure you put the dipper on the correct way or it will do less than nothing. The opening should face the cam. I hope this helps.

What size of hole should you drill in the rod cap? Mike

How much can you safely shave off the rod nuts to make room for the dippers? Mike

A 1/8" hole should be fine. You shouldn't have to shave anything off the nuts in my experience.
