How do I take off the wheels? My rears have Rocky's on them and the front just won't pull off. Do I have to take the Rocky's off too? I took off all four castleated (sp) nuts. Is this where the 'wheel puller ' comes in? Thanks!
Bob, A little more information is required before all of your questions can be answered. The rear wheels are held on by the two big castleated nuts on the axles. Remove the cotter and unscrew. A puller will work well most of the time,if they don't come off by hand. Are you running demountable rims? The front wheels are held on by a nut, washer and the outer bearing is threaded on the front spindle also. Remember the one on the left(drivers side ) is right hand and the passenger side is left hand threaded. This is to prevent the rotation of hub from over tightening the bearings and breaking something. Where did these four nuts you are talking about come from? Are they the same ones I've talked about?
After I took off the hub caps, I removed the cotter pins and then the castleated nuts. Now I want to take off the whole wheel so I can clean and inspect whats behind it. I do not want to change the tire. I have demountable rims, but in this case I don't think it matters? Or does it? Maybe the key wedge is holding it on. Should I just pull harder? Thanks, Bob
That's true on the rear wheels, and you shouldn't have to remove the RM's. On the front ones you have to remove outer bearings. Winter time is a good time to repack those.
Thanks for your help Jack, I'll do that tomorrow. Regards, Bob
Bob,
See question 89 How are the Wheels removed? at: http://www.mtfca.com/books/21manual.htm
For the rear wheel, unless you have an axle shim on the rear axle or have recently put the rear wheel on, it normally should not come off with just hand pressure. There are several suggestions at: http://www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/29/17754.html and if you do a key word search Rear wheel puller(click on the search icon at the top and again at the bottom of the forum thread) you can see several others.

I've heard it said that if you do not have a rear wheel puller, you can remove the hubcaps and cotter keys, loosen the castelated nuts a turn enough to give the hub some room. Then reinstall the cotters and hubcaps and run around the block a trip or two and the hubs will pop out to the nuts.
There's no excuse for not having (and carrying with you at all times) a proper wheel puller. If you don't want to pay ebay prices for an original Ford-script one, contact Roy Mathis at shelbydeanjean1@netzero.net to get a nicely-made brand-new one. They're only $35, and worth every penny.
