Could anyone point me to a web site or other resource that would describe typical driving events which could be used for a club activity. Examples: slow race, spear the potato, blindfolded driver (co-pilot gives directions),etc.ect. Thanks!

Jesse, you've already mentioned most of the ones I'm familiar with. Our local Model A club does these at picnics etc. The T club usually doesn't. This past year, they also had one where the driver was blindfolded on a straight course about 50-60 feet from an orange traffic cone. The idea was to start driving toward the cone and to stop as close as you could estimate. Closest car won. Also did a slow race (had to leave clutch out once it was out on the A's; they decided in my case that I had to hold the low pedal down once it was down). Also speared potatoes. Years ago, I recall they did one where you had to drive around an oil drum holding a long rope attached to the drum. The idea was not to let the rope touch the ground and to have your hold on the rope be as close as possible to the drum without pulling it over. (I'm finding this one easy to visualize and hard to describe - hope it's clear what I mean.)

We go to a small horse arena at the San Diego County Fair and have one T at each end. The driver gets out and cranks the car runs around once gets in and drives to the other end. If he uses the starter he has to get out and run around twice before driving to the other end and if she happens to get a "free start" has to run around 3 times before driving to the other end. If the driver cannot run, can have a passenger for a "designated runner". The first one to the other end is the winner

Another one we do is to blindfold the driver, and then he has to drive an obstacle course marked by rubber cones. The passenger tells the driver which way to turn. Best time without hitting any cones wins.

another gme is to have the passenger stab a potato while driving by. Uses a long pole with a point on one end.

A fun game that was done on the Ohio Jamborees in past years was to set up a driving course complete with parallel parking, a snaking winding path and other obstacles. The driver would be blindfolded and the passenger would have to verbally guide the driver through. Pretty funny results.

I was lucky enough to win a "teeter-totter" (see-saw?) event with an A once. The task was to get your car up with neither end of the "totter" touching the ground for so many seconds. The quickest to balance won. It'd be easier in a T with the instant reverse we've got; might be a real band-burner, though.

John,

Several years ago I read an article in "Old Car's Weekly" The Teeter Totter was one of the first "challenges" created after the AACA was founded in 1935 & Model T's always won & a few chapters banned the use of a T in the contest because they didn't have to double clutch.

Our club has a teeter totter. Until last Spring it had been at least 7 years since its last use, it was brought out for the 2006 Picnic. Quite a few of our members had never seen one, much less tried. . .this was my husband's first attempt.

Teeter - Then - Totter!

At the 2005 Picnic we had a scavenger hunt. . . I believe it was 10 items that we had to gather from two different courses. The first car back with all 10 correct items was the winner. Samples items were: the biggest rock; smallest rock; then we were given 3 helium filled balloons - to see who could bring back all 3; another stop we were given a paper cup full of water - to see who could bring back the fullest cup; a golf ball from the golf course; the phrase from a building at a given address, and I can't remember the other items!
But it was really fun, especially with the kids and grandkids in the cars, everyone got to play.

We have also done poker runs. Best hand from five cards from different locations wins.

Have fun!

-Kathy

We play a fun game where a course is laid out with starting crank height loops. The idea is to pick them with your crank. For a real challenge, blindfold the driver and have the passenger give directions.

Don't have any race involving backwards driving! Thirty years ago, I pole vaulted over my front wishbone at the Old Car Festival and bent several suspension components when the steering wheel whipped out of my hands. The races I go through now are shoe piles where one passengers shoes are thrown in a pile with the other racers. The passenger runs down to the pile on the other end, puts on the shoes and runs back. Then the cars race to the end of the course. Another is balloons tethered to short strings that have to be broken by the tire. If the balloons are on the passenger side and half deflated, this can be a skill test. Another is paper cups of water on a paint stirrer or narrow board. Drive to the end of the track without spilling.

Two more. 1 a team event with two cars driving side by side with a passenger in each car holding a socker type ball between two plumbers plungers longest distance without dropping the ball wins. 2. remove radiator cap and place a 4 or 5 inch soft rubber ball atop of the radiator neck. longest distance before ball falls off wins. My favorate is the teeter-totter. Does anyone have drawings with measurements to build one. Need to build one for this year's summer fun ralley.

TOM! I was there when you "pole vaulted" over your front wishbone! What a sight, I'll never forget it. I was one of the ones who helped pick the car up and jack the wishbone back in place. As I recall, you also had some fun driving to the Village one year with an axle installed backwards. (That's the set-up you should have used in the backing up race.)
