Does anyone have a good method for removing the end of the bow from oval top sockets ? The bow is no good but the end is stuck tightly in the socket----thanks

Drill into it with a 1/4 inch bit,screw in a lag bolt long enoungh to put one end in the vise. Then tap the bow off using a piece of hardwood and a hammer.

Don't forget to look and remove any small nails or screws that may have been driven through the top iron and into the wood. Depending on how many coats of paint and if they sanded between coats sometimes they are hidden.

Jack's method wood work without removing the small nail(s) but it will work easier with the nails removed. If they are really stubborn -- I would think (haven't tried it but it sounds like it would work) you could heat them lightly with a propane torch. They should expand a little and then tap them out as Jack suggested. Don't use a lot heat and have some water near by in case the wood catches fire.
