I was out tinkering with the '26 T Touring last weekend and noticed that the rubber fan belt seemed a little frayed. I took a closer look and realized the three pulleys (crankshaft, fan, and water pump) weren't lined up, and this rubber fan belt, half the width of the pulleys, was stretched very tightly to make it track. I'm amazed the bearings in the fan and waterpump aren't completely shot.
I cut off the old belt, was able to loosen the retaining screw on the waterpump pulley and move it over to align with the other two, and ordered a replacement leather belt from Snyder's. The belt came, fits perfectly, and the setup just sounds and looks much better with the engine running than before. I think its back to what it should have been.
My question is, should I treat the leather belt with something? It seems very dry.
Try Neat's Foot oil or Mink oil.
Always try and replace with genuine Ford parts whenever possible. Grin.
However, if your belt runs to the back of the top fan pulley that usually means the fan bushings are worn and since the fan will tip down at the front the belt will try and ride to the highest point which is now in the back as is in this picture.
A temporary fix is to add some extra crown to the center of the pulley by adding a couple of wraps of electric tape to center. If it tracks correctly then you know that the bushings are worn or the crown in the aluminum pulley has worn flat. Bob
