Model T Ford Forum: Forum 2005: Question about steering column assembly and firewall

Hi:
My son and I are building up a truck (not a TT). Our engine and many parts are 1926. We have the earlier style commercial fenders etc., and the "high" firewall (not the 1926 firewall). The question is, what brackets do we use to attach the steering column assembly to the firewall? Will the 1926 steering wheel/column assembly work? What bracket do we use? We are almost to the point where we can start to try to assemble the firewall and then the steering wheel/column assembly, but we want to plan ahead for the correct brackets, or even to learn if what we want to do will work. Any advice and information will be appreciated!!!
Thanks,
John and Stathi

You will want to use the 1923(after wood firewall) to about July 1925 brackets for the firewall. The 1926-27 steering column will work but you will need to use a pre 26 bracket where it mounts on the frame. Also the rod that goes from the steering to the arm will need to be pre 1925. Hope this is of some help. And good luck to you and your son. You should be more then able to do the work, Model T's were built for people that never work with more then a horse. Have fun.

John, You don't say if your frame is 26 or later. If it's 26-27, then the 26-27 Fordor steering column will attach to the frame at the correct angle without having to drill new holes.

Thank you, Thomas and Mark, for your help! Any other ideas or information will be appreciated. I'll let you know what we discover when we get the firewall set up. It's a 1925 frame and firewall. We got the correct bottom bracket for the column from Lang's, but when we get to the firewall and cab, we want to have an idea of what to do before hand if possible.
Thanks again.
John
