How much oil goes into the engine? I know it should be between the two pet cocks. But how many quarts is that?

The repair manual specifies 1 gallon of oil. What you should do is close the bottom petcock on the tranny housing, open the top petcock, and pour in the oil until it drips out the top petcock.

I think that is about 3 1/2 litres, which isnt very much really!

Will's method will overfill the engine because there will be more oil sitting on top of the inspection cover with the engine not running than there will be once the engine has been run. If you do it this way, which is fine, start the engine and turn it off. Then open the top petcock and some 1/2 quart will come pouring back out before the level is correct at the top petcock.

Seth

PS: Only three quarts of oil goes into my engine. Three quarts of oil plus one quart of automatic transmission fluid. The transmission seems to love this red motor oil.

It doesn't matter whether you run the engine first or not! When the engine runs, the oil will go to the front and run down in the dips of the crankcase cover. However, you will get some oil splashed all around the engine which takes a few minuits to drain back into the pan. Technically speaking, if you check the oil right after running the engine, your oil will read a little LOWER than when it has been setting for a while.

Hmmm never tried trans fluid in a T... I know moisture will knock the linings off your T400 clutch though....
