Model T Ford Forum: Forum 2005: Clutch spring tension

I am experiencing a bad chatter when I shift from low to high. Only way to avoid it is to let the engine idle down between shifts. Thinking it must be in the clutch, I tried to tighten all three clutch finger set screws and noticed the tension on the three screws is uneven. One is quite a bit tighter than the other two. How do I adjust the tension so all are the same when the engine is in the car? I have always set the spring height at 2 1/16" when the engine is out of the car, but I can't do that with the trans cover on. I recall something about using a 13/16" spacer between the sliding hub and the driving plate. Is this the procedure? Does it work?

Richard, just make or get a 13/16" wide strip of strap iron and use it as a go/no-go gauge.
