I am putting a rolling chassis together from parts and I have a question about thrust bearing etc. for the drive shaft spool housing. I have the spool that has the removable type sleeve. Can I use T-2591-B (Thrust Ball Assy, and two T-2591 (Drive Shaft Ball Thrust Collar) on the drive shaft or do I need something else?? I have looked at two suppliers and they show these parts for 20-27 and 11-27 years. Then another supplier shows a T2589-B as a Drive Shaft Ball Bearing assy. 11-21. Will either style work? Then what is the T2590 snap ring for?

Without getting into all those part numbers,it will work.

I agree, just cut off a length of sleeve and press it the spool in front of the sleeve already in place. Cut it off so it butts up against the existing sleeve and is flush with the front of the spool. Then you can use the later caged ball bearing and two race set up. In effect you are substituting the sleeve for the sides of the bearing cup. Works great.

Oops meant to say "In effect you are creating the inside diameter of a new style spool in the old one"

Larry -.Im not an expert but i havent opened a rear axle without finding a broken sleeve usualy at the keyway area and besides you cant get hayes bearings for this, only repro --Go fot the spool with the roller bearing and sealed uper ball bearing the vendors sell ..Just my opinion

I'd have to agree with that. One heckofa lot easier to set gears too!

IMHO the original set up works fine. Most all my cars have the enclosed spool so I was having a tough time finding good used or NOS cups and races for the DS thrust bearing assembly. Then I discovered all you had to do was cut off a piece of outer sleeve to fit in the space normally occupied by the cup thus allowing the use of the double race and caged ball bearing set up. Those pieces are easy to find. In addition, the vendors sell new sleeves to press on the driveshaft and outer sleeves that fit inside the enclosed spool. So really, all you need to find is a good used roller bearing and you're ready to rumble. While I agree the solid roller bearings are not the way to go and NOS Hyatt bearings are scarce as hell, good used ones can be found at swap meets. Like someone said a couple days ago, bring a caliper with you and measure those you find. You might surprise yourself.
