Help I'm trying to put together my rear axle. I have new sleeves 2509Ql and 2509BQL. I also have new neoprene seals 2510N and 2511AS. My problem is there is only enough room for the sleeves at the outer ends of the axles. I install one of the new boot style inner seals, then the sleeve and the sleeve stuck out 1/8". The outer seal instructions says to remove all inner seals then instal outer seal. Kinda defeats the purpose without inner seals to keep oil and grease from mixing.

Dave,

I went through the same problem with my 1912 axle. See http://www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/29/37415.html

When I put my rear axle together, I used the neoprene seal. On the advice of one of the regulars on this forum, I ground down that 1/8" off the sleeve. I've had no problems.

Dave, I experienced the same problem two years ago when rebuilding my rear end it was 23 year model.I put in the new inner seals and the modern day outer aluminum seals. On advice from others i trimmed off the extra eight inch that was sticking out from putting the inner seals in. I feel now that was a mistake. I took the rearend out to put in my new ruckstell and the modern day seals were trashed. Also the sleeves were destoyed on the outer edge as the bearing was able to slide out just a bit with the sleeves cut short. I think the best is to use hardened sleeves and leave them full length, use the neoprene or leather inner seals and use felt seals on the outside. If you cant get the felt retainer cups to go on all the way then trim just a little off the felt. Here is a picture of what my sleeves look like this time around. I can post a picture of the destroyed sleeves if you would like. My car rearend had around 7000 miles when i took it apart after rebuilding. I like to drive my car a lot so I am going to take the wheels off every season from now on and check things out. Mike

Mike,
I assume that you have not had a problem with the sleeve or bearing rubbing againts the drum. Is that correct? Maybe the advice I received was bad. I put the neoprene seal on the axle, then the ground down hardened sleeve, then the felt outer. I haven't checked anything yet, but maybe I better.

I had the same problem, threw out the neopreme and put the felt seals back, may have used a couple on both sides. I put Watts seals on outside. Works fine.
