I want to print this Form from the MTFCA Operating Manual, but every time I try and print these pages from the Manual on-line, I get blank pages. Is there some "block" (besides my brain!) that is preventing me from doing this? Is the Form available from some other source? Thanks.

Willis, Are you using Acrobat Reader 8? It printed with no problems for me just now. Earlier versions may not be compatiable.

Willis, the PDF opened with Acrobat Reader 5.0, so that version or later should be ok. A possible workaround could be to right-click on the Operations Manual (PDF File) link, then left-click Save Target As, download the file to disk and see if it opens from there.

Click the printer icon inside the Acrobat plug-in - do not click File, print in Internet Explorer.

I don't understand why all these workarounds are being suggested. Why not download the latest and greatest version of the free Acrobat reader? It has more features than 5.0 and it prints the documents with no problems. The longer you have obsolete software, the more problems you will experience.

I downloaded the 39 pages, then put the "hand" over the page I wanted to print and selected to print current page and it did.
I appreciate you all bringing this to my attention.I had been wondering over the past few weeks if there was such a thing that I could print, read over, and make sure I had things right on the T.
Thomas,my take on not downloading the newest ,latest thing is for a older machine it takes up more memory and makes things slower.
My first computer worked fine till I tried to update the windows 98 1 time.I finally had to reformat, looseing everything and starting over.It looks like this software-hardware mess would plateu out and slow down changeing so much. There aint a bit a need for so much speed in the consumer market.Commercial market, maby.

Whoops; both occurrences of the string open should be replaced with print in my post above.

The new Acrobat may take up a little more hard drive space. I don't know this for sure, but it's an assumption because all programs seem to be getting larger. As far as being slower, it's not. As far as being easier to use with more viewing and printing capability, it is. I just can't see wasting time with an outdated program when those creating native .pdf documents are typically the people creating our parts catalogs and other documents we access. These professionals are going to use the latest level of Acrobat that they can afford in order to create the documents. It seems like we waste more time trying to develop and implement workarounds than to do it right the first time.

Too many times we complain our computers are slow when we are ourselves at fault. Microsoft has free downloads of third party programs such as Startup Inspector so that we can look at our computers and see what speed sapping programs are running in the background. Regular virus scans and firewalls will also improve performance. Spyware programs such as Sbybot Search and Destroy are also free for the asking.

There is no excuse in my mind for having an obsolete .pdf reader on my computer. Hard drive storage is cheap, half a terabite can be purchased for $105. If we can re-build Ruckstells, I am sure we are all capable of sliding a cover off, tightening four phillips screws, and adding a second drive to our computers.

The new version of Acrobat is very annoying. Every time I open a document it has to check for updates on the web, then it always gives a popup telling you to restart your computer before continuing. Note: I have selected "Never check for updates".

Royce, Reference Startup Inspector in my previous post. Adobe and many many other software suppliers have programs that boot up with the computer to check for updates. In my case, this includes my software for my wireless keyboard, my sound card, and other silly things that I know how to maintain myself. These background programs are the things slowing our computers. Microsoft gives us things like the Messenger program and then forces it to start and go into standby. Media Player from Microsoft wants to search the web for cover art every time you play a CD. AOL gives you a bunch of their free programs. These all waste proccessor time. Startup Inspector, a free download from Microsoft, lets you go through your computer and disable undesirable features that you don't need running. Each program line is documented and suggestions such as "leave alone", "users choice", and "recycle" are noted. Run it once and notice how many icons disappear from the right hand bar next to the clock. Automatic Adobe updates is one of the ones I disabled. I feel bad for hijacking this thread, but there are better ways to do things instead of using antiquated software.

Willis, are you printing just the first page and cancelling the Print function? When the manual is first opened at the top of the first page, it appears blank and if you just print one page, it may be all blank. If you just click Print, you may start to print the whole manual, with a blank first page.

If you scroll down to the Safety Inspection form and do a Right Mouse Click and then click Print, there is an option on the Printer window to print the whole manual or Current Page. Click the current page option and only the page you need will print. That is two pages in this case. You can repeat the Print selection or type in both page numbers, separated by a comma and space. The current page number shows at the top on my display.

Hmm, as far as "no reason" to run outdated programs, SOME of us live "in the boonies" where our internet connection is called "dial-up". For me that means the through-put is around 19K. Acrobat would take all night to download--if the modems don't disconnect!
So, until I can put the new stuff on a disk, or geek stick, I run the old stuff. I get the new stuff from work, when the IT guy feels sorry for me!
T'ake care

And what is wrong with my dialup? :>)If websites and such wouldnt create pages with no much unneeded graphics, dialup would be just fine.
High speed cost to dang much.I aint never got a straight answer on a price for it,I allways get this "blah-blah for 2 months" deal stuff when I ask price.I started out in july of 99 with this dial up service, still have the same 2 email addys I had when I started. No need to change.Would still be on my old computer if the power companys wireing hadnt burnt it up.

I HAD to go DSL. Two high schoolers that became college students and my wife the nurse looking for more degrees living in the same house made for some real bad fights. Then when I tried to get on to look at old cars, the fur really flew.

DSL, a wireless router, an ethernet switch for the desktops, and one networked laser printer that doesn't need those bubblejet cartridges that cost more than my tires equaled peace and quiet. The only thing I hear is Staples delivering another case of printer paper. This is Priceless in my mind.

I ruled out cable internet when some of my neighbors discovered they were all networked together and were inadvertantly sharing files. They fixed it, but talk about paranoia. Now all I have to deal with is every neighbors' wireless router broadcasting LINKSYS on the unsecured network they created themselves.

Nowadays, The only bad part about all this is when my wife comes in the room and surprises me.

Her: "What are you looking at online?"
Me: "Pornography."
Her: "Don't lie to me!<insert>, I saw you looking at the MTFCA Classifieds again! Don't even THINK of dragging home more car parts!"

Perhaps dial up was the better way.

This tech mess is getting out of hand. Our wonderfull goverment mandated this digital tv mess to start in feb of 09.They are really publising this 40 dollar coupon to get a "convertor box".I went to circut city,$169 for a "box" and they only carried 1 type.No choices.
It will cost me a mint at that price to get my 6 tv's to work.Cost even more to do the unthinkable and throw out perfectly good sets and buy these cheap made new 1's.
All the while the goverment is going to sell the old bandwitdh to internet providers for billions.

Mack,

Do you have cable TV or an antenna? My cable company told me I won't need the box if I stick with their low-def cable package.

No,we dont have cable or satilite,we still use the bunny ears.Dont watch anything but a little news once in a while. The tv here in the computer room is a late 70's Zenith. It is so old the Habitat for Humnaity store turned it down when I tried to donate it to them.I was going to buy a new cheap tv that was a bit smaller.Well since I couldnt get rid of the old 1 without wasteing it,I just put it back where it was and plugged it back in.Great color and works fine.Cable woulda been good back when I was layed up after the wreck but since I can manage to get out the door most days, the tv gathers dust.

I'd wait before purchasing and let the market get a surplus of the converters. Then come in with the coupon when the prices drop. Plan B is lay in a good supply of videos because there's not much good on TV anyways.

There's great stuff on tv if you look in the right places. Right now I'm in the middle of watching: "7 Wonders of the Ancient World" and "Missing in Mig Alley" (Korean War), from History Channel and "The Brain Fitness Program" from PBS. Yeh, I have a split personality... . and also a Digital Video Recorder that makes recording and controlling all these things a piece of cake.

I also have saved several Hist CHnl "Modern Marvels" shows, including "Assembly Lines." Guess what's featured on that program..

The real challenge is deciding what not to watch.

Okay I admit there is some good stuff on the History Channel and Turmer Classics. For that I built a Microsoft Media Center with three tuners (2 NTSC, 1 HD) and gave it 12tB (1200 gB) of storage. This allows me to channel surf in advance and record the neat stuff. It also allows me to blow by the commercials. Ultimately it allows me to hide in the shop and work on cool things.

It is also neat for catching episodes of The Office. I swear I work with some of these people. Of Course, they probably say the same about me.
