Has anyone ever used the rubberized gasket material from Auto Zone on their rear differential? This is the 1/32'' stuff...
The paper gaskets from the parts suppliers seem to be really thin stuff. Is it that way on purpose? I don't want to mess up any clearances in the rear differential.
Either way, I'm good. I have both. All of those paper gaskets don't seem right to me.
I have the new thrust washers/bearings in the rear... if that makes a difference. The rear differential seemed a little tight, yet it doesn't have any oil and I was turning it by hand. It was turning o'k.
Use the paper 1's that come with your gasket set.You will cause clearance problems using thick gaskets.I thought the same thing but stuck with the right stuff.
Soak the paper gasket in water and lay it out flat on newspaper to dry and it will work just fine.
I used paper gasket's twice. And they leaked both times.. Finally someone told me to make sure I had everything stoned nice and smooth and put it together with no gasket..Just a thin coat of blue silicone... So I did that and It hasen't leaked one drop since. That was 2 years ago. And that is the way I'm going to do my next one. Good luck on your choice.
Thanks Gents! I'll use the one that came with the kit...
