I am getting some wood hubs ready to make some wheels and am having a problem. Most of the ones i am finding the bearing race is loose in the hub. The race was turning in the hub. I was trying about brazing up the hubs and turning them. will the brass hold up? What about spray welding? What has anyone done to fix this? I know, find some good hubs, well some time we will have to fix these. Any ideas? Thanks, Dan
Depending on how bad they are, Loctite 609 Retaining Compound is made for that purpose.
Brass build up is strong enough and would would work IF you have a good way to get it tuned down true to the hub axis.
Dan, I have done these using a very sharp punch and dinging the inside of the hub(many times) then using the green bearing and sleeve setting locktite. You will get many opinions on this so do as you see fit.I have used this method through the years and have had good luck. My budget does'nt allow for expensive repairs and as long as everything goes back tight and I deem it safe I go with it. I have seen races spin in modern cars and run many miles at high speeds. Not recommended but happens. Most people now never even think of repacking wheel bearings till they have trouble. KB

John McLaren turns out the race faces in the hubs .030 and gets .030-over o.d. races. I have a set of wheels he built, and I might be able to find the part numbers for them. If not, you probably could get them from Timken.
Dan, it sounds like you are working on early hubs. Loose bearings are common on those. If it's a late hub, just get another, they are everywhere! If it's not real bad, what about plating? Of course you'd have to tape off the threads.
How about cutting a piece of .002 shim stock the width of the race, wrap it around the race, and tap both into the hub? If that's not tight, maybe some .005 stock? I had a front wheel grease seal that was loose in the hub, so I cut a shim out a steel can. Problem solved.

Hey Dan, I had the same problem on the front spindles of my 27 RAJO had the spindles metal sprayed and machined back worked a treat, cheap too
