Can anyone tell me about this picnick kit. It has flatware, cups, and plates, and my have had other things when new. Knives have "Auto Special" etched on them.

That's neat those are spendy now since that silverware is well, silver. If you display it keep an eye on it.

Those were made throughout the '20s by several companies in a wide variety of sizes and shapes. One of the two I have also has "AUTO SPECIAL" etched on the knives. There were many combinations of pieces inside. Yours appears to have a sandwich box and cups. It is likely that it may have originally had a Thermos bottle in one of the long sections. Properly complete sets are a bit hard to come by. Both of my sets are missing something.
One of my sets looks a lot like that one (yours?). The other of mine stands upright and is rounded on both ends with a Thermos nicely fitted in each end.
Those sets are getting expensive. I am glad I bought mine over thirty years ago. They show up on eBad often, and I have seen nice ones sell for several hundred dollars. The nicest one I ever saw was at a swap meet about twenty years ago. It was about five times that big, service for twelve, multiple nickel plated tins, and sold for $1000.
Drive carefully, and enjoy, W2

Here is one I keep sitting on - I've been told it was worth anywhere from $300 (utter BS) to $1200 which seems likely - I'd planned on putting it onto T-Bay but don't see how to ship it without risking damage as there is a set of 6 crystal glasses and two crockery pots in there. I thought the T-Pot was a nice touch...

Neil, Nice set. Appears to be 1920's to 30's.

Mark, The tea Pot is an interesting touch!

Here's a link to a past thread that would fit in here.

Thanks for the link Jay - I'd forgotten about that thread. I passed up one of those Running-Board kitchen's about 20-25 years ago that was in a local junk shop for $35 or $40 - boy have times changed.

The wicker sets I have are English and are more Victorian in style, more 1910's - teens. There is also an alcohol burner and tank opposite the tea-pot, the boxes are all porcelain too with spring-loaded silveer-plate covers clamped on.

The hard-case sets seem to be US made and from the 20's into the 30's. There is usually 3 or 4 sets at Hershey each year with widely varying prices.

I have another much smaller wicker set for two without the tea-pot, a running board set similar to the one starting this thread with place settings for six (missing stuff), a 6-person suit-case set complete, and one other 4-person suit-case set also complete. The last one came from an auction just last Saturday.

We have a small collection of these from a 1914 set (came with some sales literature), one from 1923, one from 1926, plus a running board kitchen that mounts on the running board with a drop-down front with wings that fold out into a table. We frequently display them with our Ts or As and they get alot of comments. They frequently came with thermos bottles for drinks and the metal sandwich boxes and what seems to be same salt a pepper shakers in each. I think the wicker ones with the teapots and china tend to be English, while the US ones are hard sided with enamelware. They vary in prices wildly from a couple hundred to over a thousand. The English ones, if intact, really command the price.
