Has anyone heard from Bob Scherzer lately? I was messaging him back and forth about parts for a homemade HCCT that I am building but haven't been able to reach him. He produces real nice reproduction parts that I would love to incorporate into my project. Is there anyone else making reproduction HCCT parts?
His birthday is today!
Seriously?
Randy,
I sent you PM regarding a Weston HCCT Meter.

Sorry for not getting back with folks needing castings and other T items. Took a two week vacation and just got back and am trying to get back in the grove again. Will try and get back with those needing things and yes I turned the big seven 0 today.
Will try and get back with you Randy in the next day or two.
Bob, is this the meter housing you were looking for? I think I still have couple of these castings back in the shop but will have to go look. As you can see it's only the housing. I tried to find a meter guts to fit in it but came up blank. It should work OK if you have a Jewel meter's guts.
Here one finished.
One in the raw.
I make new artworks for both the weston and jewel versions of the HCCT ammeter. These are totally regenerated and are crisp and new with the authentic off white color as original.
Are there plans available for building your own tester?
Steve,
There is a set of plans linked in this thread:

A guy named Gary Tillstrom came up with a set of plans for a 'do it yourself' with leftover items that he passed aorund...

Happy Birthday Bob!
That's great, you were able to get away and take a vacation. I was beginning to wonder and hope everything was ok. I'm happy to hear all is good, and again - Happy Birthday Bob!
You share your birthday with my mom, she turns 75 today.
Steve, the plans that George mentioned and has posted are the same ones I used to build mine. (pictured above)
Bob, you cannot be 70. That would mean that when you were teaching my auto shop class, you were 11 years younger than I am now.
Finished my HCCT with mostly parts on hand and ideas from Gary Tilstrom and Ron Patterson plus I threw in a little southern engineering of my own. Rude and crude but it works.

If some of you making your own HCCT and want to save some by using a brake drum style instead of the more expensive brass spark ring. I have cast some using an NOS drum for a pattern. I then turn the drum true on the lathe. Many original used drums are warped or out of round and can cause spark jump distance to change as the pointer arm rotates.
Also have the crank arms that were used with this drum style HCCT. The drum goes for $35 and crank arm for $25 plus shipping. Need to know your HCCT shaft size so I can bore the crank arm to fit correctly. Bob
Bob: Do you make the Delrin type insulators for the spark ring? Mine are warped.
One suggestion, if you make one from scratch, put a stout handle on it. There is nothing more awkward and clumsy then tiring to move a HCCT and the fact that most do not have a handle makes it that much harder.

We're looking for this style handle for an Allen;
I have cast this style before but in aluminum. It believe it was used when a motor drive wasn't being used to turn the tester's flywheel. The pointer was placed on the shaft first and the crank handle on after. If it was motor driven the crank and handle could be removed.
I replace the iron handle part with one either an aluminum or wooden handle which also turns on the handle's shaft.
I'm showing an aluminum handle on the right before it has been drilled out and a center bolt placed in it like as with the wooden one shown above. Bob
Mark, that handle can be welded very easily. If I was closer to you I would fix you right up. Dave
Does anyone know if a standard Weston AC Ammeter can be converted from this:
to the one that is specifically set up for a HCCT?
Randy,
Most any AC Iron Vane type ammeters can be converted to HCCT meters. I have converted Weston, GE and Westinghouse meters to HCCT meters. Here is a link to an article that I wrote on how I converted a Westinghouse meter.

Very nice. You do great work Bob. I have sent you a couple PM questions as I am very interested in putting a nice meter on my project.
Mark, the coil tester I just restored has that identical handle, but no where does it say Allen on it. Click the Another HCCT Restored link to see the one that I just finished.
I think the handle is from a Service Products HCCT rather than an Allen. Bob
I was just talking to Ron Patterson on the phone and he told me that is the original Ford 18Z245 design. That number is cast in the belt pulley, behind the spark ring and along the lyre back side in the first HCCT that I restored. Service Electric Company is cast in the lower front base of that one. The company location is also cast in the base. seems like it was Ohio, but I could find no information on the company.
Ron said the original Ford units had Ford and a number along the base on the right side. He also said that Henry Ford actually released the molds or drawing to several manufacturers about 1920.
The Service Electric Company HCCT.
Note that the Service Electric Company HCCT also has the spark plug test fixture and an additional side terminal that went to a dummy load for testing a Magneto output on a running engine and measuring the current on the meter.
