I have information that says the color code for French Gray pinstripe colors is Ditzler PPG IM586, or Dupont DS 113.

Can anyone confirm this? I'd love to see a photo of this color against midnight blue.

One Shot has a color "Medium Gray 195-L. Does anyone know how close it is to French Gray?

Is there a specific type of paint that is supposed to be used for pinstripes?

Don, how is your pinstriping coming?

Thanks

I believe a majority of pinstripers mainly use 1 Shot.

A talented pinstriper can create different colors by mixing off-the-shelf shades of 1 Shot. The fellow that pinstriped one of my dad's antique cars did this. He mixed the color and drew test stripes while we stood and watched until he achieved a color that my dad found acceptable.

Keith,

These colours are taken from some Model A information I have had for years. In 1929 Ford started using the colour " Andalusite Blue " which is an almost a Black Blue". Very dark colour. They used French Gray as a pin stripe colour.

Regards, John

Keith, I just got everything together. I bought half pints of black and white One Shot enamel. Gonna try to mix my own gray. My plans are to do it this weekend.

Like previously mentioned, mix your own from One Shot. I have some "A" wheels that I painted and mixed from the above Ditzler formula, and the color hints of green, like the above color chip. The old time pinstriper (Tommy the Greek from Oakland) mixed One Shot to match the above color chip and used it on my Andalusite Blue sedan. It looks great as a stripe against the very dark blue. None of the standard One Shot colors are correct right out of the can. You have to mix it.

For french gray you'll want to mix a little bit of one shot brown and immitation gold witch is basicaly just a yellow to come up with the correct shade,a little extra brown will make a good gray to go with a dark blue. and when you lay out your test stripes you'll want to let it dry a few minuts to see the real look. as the gray will darken dramaticly as it dries. for pinstriping i use medium enamel reducer same as you reduce automotive paint with but for lettering i'll cut it with mineral spirits to allow more work time.
