Hello All,

I have the Bosch Triple Gear Magneto Setup on a '15 engine and have been living with a "improvised" linkage system I made up. Can anyone provide dimensions and pictures of an authentic linkage setup?

Thanks

Mr. Tomlinson it's your lucky day! I actually just won the exact same setup on eBay. It's supposed to arrive at my house tomorrow.

Not perfect, but you can see a lot. This was one of the pictures that the eBay seller included.

Wow: The ebay seller provided a photo of my car! Interesting... I got that linkage out of my Aunt's garage when I was putting the '13 Speedster together.

Lol wow Bill, that definitely is your car.

Question - do you have any issues with the plug wires being right over the exhaust manifold like that? I was intending on routing mine forward and then up and back like you normally see with a distributor.

Also, do you hand crank yours? How hard is it to start without an impulse coupling for the mag?

You could always wrap the exhaust manifold. I had to do this because the exhaust was cooking the paint on the hood side panel.

Since the question always comes up, the sparkplug janitors keep crud out of the wells. They had evolved from somebody in the era using tin can lids.

Here is a picture of the complete unit before installation

Here is the Bosch D U 4 ready to run. The wires appear to be touching the exhaust manifold but they are actually about two inches away. They come straight up from the magneto and arc over to each spark plug, no they don't arc as in electricity, the simple bend in a nice curve that keeps them away for the manifold.

You should be able to copy this picture and make the part.

To clear up a few questions... Yes, I did hand crank the car. It is now owned by Ron White & he has fitted an impulse which makes starting MUCH easier!
The linkage with the red background is the correct one. The one above with the wood background is what I scrounged up out of a box of parts & lucked out making it work.
As my Dad stated, the spark plug wires are not too close to the exhaust. There is a very tight fit between the intake & red mag cap though.

Seth,

Before you do your installation, can you give me the measure lengths of the various linkages?

Thanks
Howard

We just found out which terminal on the mag went to wh8ch spark plug and then just held the wore up in a nice curve that did not let it drag on the hot places and cut to fit. It is not rocket science, just common sense.

I made a test tool by researching Dyke's Motor Manual 1918 and made the tool. Here is a picture of it. You simply adjust the gap to spark well and test your magneto with a half inch drill hooked to a rubber tube to hold the twisting by pressure and friction.

Hey Howard, I just have the pictures to work off of. I just got my mag and gear drive setup in the mail yesterday.

I already cleaned and rebuilt the drive section but I'm not going to install the mag just yet. I'm going to wait until after I've sent it up to the folks in Mainely Magnetos to have them see if the mag needs rebuilding and to go ahead and set me up an impulse coupling. I got some fresh plug wire and terminals and I'm going to mock up the wires and the linkages in the next day or two.

If you want I can measure what I make. I'll also take pics before and after.

I got the new plug wires made. I was tracking down a leak on the front center head bolt so I had the head off earlier this week - when I got it back on I added the wire holders.

Looks pretty sweet. Gonna look even cooler when I get the updraft manifold and Zenith carb on.
