Model T Ford Forum: Forum 2013: What exactly are these, and how much should I pay?

Today Bailey and I saw these two frames. I'm looking for wire wheels for our speedster project.

I once was told that the wire wheels with the larger hubs were good to have.

Are these '26 - '27 wire wheels? Or are they Model A wheels?

They appear to be in excellent shape and need a thorough cleaning, blasting, and painting (oh, and tires, too!)

If they're T wire wheels, what's a reasonable price?

Bill,

They appear to be '26-'27 wires on a chassis of the same vintage.

Check them for rust out where the rubber has been in contact with the wheel for decades. If good...I'd see if I could get it low ball $300 high $600. All depends on condition and how bad you want them.

You almost have enough for another car right there.

I pick up a similar chassis with wood wheels for $100 2 yrs back.

Larry;

For both frames and eight wheels, I was thinking $500 - $600 as well.

Have you heard of the large hubs being desirable? If so, why?

Thanks again for your response, Larry.

Hi Bill, based on the pics the condition is good, however ya never know how the drive line and rearend "guts" are, but they are rebuildable. The wires also appear to be in good shape the key ways on the rear hubs determine if they are great or not. If you can pick up the chassis for $100ea, I would consider it a bargain especially with wire wheels. You really only need 5 wires to build a chassis, so pick 5 of the best and straightest, then sell the other 3 plus extra chassis for the price of your 2 chassis purchase. TT

The little pictures don't show the details very well, but being on a 26-27 T chassis those are probably 26-27 T wheels, as Larry says. If they're in good condition, $500 would be a good deal for eight of them. But I'm cheap, so I'd offer $200 for the lot and haggle.

When you say large hubs, I assume you mean the brake drums, as the hubs on all those wire wheels are the same size. For a speedster, which is normally a collection of T parts from different years anyway, the big 26-27 drums would be good because bigger drums = better brakes. They stop the car better than the smaller drums used in previous years.

To help ID Model T and Model A wheels, here are pictures:

Bill,
Steve's correct the bigger rear brake drums are great.
I'm planning on using a '26-'27 rear on a speedster build myself.
The emergency brakes are lined and have more area. Plus If you use Rockies you don't needed the extra bigger drum.

Good stuff.
Let us know how you make out. Sometimes folks just want the "junk" gone.

Steve;

I agree with offering less and haggling; I'll see what I can do.

Big thanks for the pictures link; I blew up a picture I have of the inside of one of the front wheel hubs and there are no ridges; T wheels!

Wish me luck in buying these.

Thanks again, Steve.

Boy you guys must be paying a lot less than wire wheels sell for around here. I sell them and I would not take less than $200.00 per wheel and hub. That looks like $800.00 per chassis just for the wheels and hubs. ;I have sold a lot of them over the years. I had one person come all way to Colorado from Florida to pick up a set. Every one else around here is selling them for the same price. In fact sometimes more.

Dave;
If the wheels are junk, which they probably are, all you have are, maybe, hubs.

Hubs are worth 600.00/set in mid missouri, wheels I'm like Dave Huson 1000.00/5 if you can find good ones

As far as wheel prices go there was a guy at Chickasha this year who had a set of 5 26-27 wheels in great shape painted yellow as I remember.
They had really nice whitewall tires on them also.
He was asking 1200.00 for the set of 5 wheels and tires and there was a guy trying to talk him down to an even 1000.00.
I made the circle around the main bldg. and I noticed the wheels were gone.
That was a good deal in my estimation.
Deals are where you find them.

I bought one of those 26-27 wire wheels, in good shape, for $1.37. That doesn't happen very often. If I needed one without waiting for it, I'd consider a "buy it now" price of $100 each a great deal. If you're not in a hurry, you can get lucky at an estate sale or farm auction, sometimes for a lot less.

I bought some wire wheels in chichasha when I went in 08.I think I paid 100 for the best 1 and 40 each for a couple that needed alot of work.
I have more time then money so I dont mind some work.The hubs,I done forgot what I paid for them but they aint cheap.
I would say 400 a frame would be good considering what you are getting for the money.Enough to start another speedster project or resale.
