I bought what I thought was a good steering assy. but the bevel was sawed off the end, so I cannot attach the pittman arm. How long are these, if I'm not missing much I'll just remachine the end. On the plus side, the gears and cap are good.

It's not just the taper that's missing--You're missing the threads too. Probably about two inches worth. If you know a welder and machinist you can trust, a tip could be made. Find someone that's done axles. It should be done the same way.
It might be more cost effective to just buy another shaft. Keep your eyes open this time.
It will also be infinitely more safe to buy another shaft.
