I'm doing some repairs to the compartment lid beneath the rear seat on my '12 Touring and have a question:
All of the woodwork under the seats on my car is painted black. I'm pretty sure this is all original wood, but was it originally painted ?
Thanks,
Dick
Short answer: Yes (details might vary depending on body manufacturer.) For a longer answer see Trent Bogges and Bruce McAlley's articles in the encyclopedia: http://www.mtfca.com/encyclo/P-R.htm
Dick, my observations are that the black paint used on model T woodwork was not much more than a stain. I duplicate this by mixing brushing enamel with 50% by volume of mineral turpentine. It is a thin wash and soaks in readily, leaving a non glossy finish.

OK, thanks guys. What you describe looks very much like what I'm seeing in the way of thin black paint.

Krylon Semi-Flat black paint looks just about right - in my opinion. Just put on a thin coat - just enough to make it black.

I did the same as Allan mentions with my 13 touring, a thinned down enamel wash.
