Officially school bus service commenced in New Zealand in 1924 provided by the Education Department using Ford Model T's. S.P. Bray from Sherwood Downs put his own Model T Ford truck on the road in 1925 to take at least eighteen primary and secondary children to school in Fairlie twelve miles away to demonstrate the feasibility of a bus service.

1925 photo taken outside the Fairlie Primary School. The building in the background is still there today. A ? 1924 Model T truck with the steering wheel on the right. License plate NZ 18_25. NZ number plates in use from mid 1924 to mid 1925. The truck was tracked down and it turns out it was torn down and the engine was used for a saw bench. Local children from Fairlie are standing outside the bus in mid winter, wearing the school uniform - woollen shorts, jersey, school tie and socks.
