The rear axle key has a bevel in it at one end. Is this bevel suppose to be inboard or outboard when the key is in the slot? Should the bevel portion be facing up in the slot, or does it face down in the slot? Or doesn't it really matter?

picture?

I've always placed them out and up. This is as opposed to inner, downer. YMMV.

I usually put them out and down. The keyway in the axle is dished slightly on the outer end. Many years ago, I ran into a hub that did not seat all the way on and flat. The wheel wobbled. Some careful investigation found that it was the key that pushed the hub up that little bit. I have always put the taper into the dish ever since.
Drive carefully, and enjoy, W2

The bevel goes up and in if they are original.

Thanks Ken. I thought it was in the manual but I could not find it.

Jack, Wayne, and Ken all do it different. Maybe that means it really is not that important. As long as the wheel is on tight!

Ken,I would toss that key,it's bent and wallered on the sides. So many of the originals were pretty soft.
