Model T Ford Forum: Forum 2013: I replaced bands...now there a noise?

I replaced the bands on the 23 TT and replaced the low speed and breake shaft and new springs. Just regular bands. I then poured 30wt oil all over them and it sat overnight.
This is my first time doing this.
now there it a noise (squawling) in the trans?
I have the Aux trans in Netural.
I have a Free netural, low speed 2" off floor and truck moves smooth and thats as far as the pedal will go. Brake will stop the motor 1/2 way to floor (to tight) and wont go down anymore. Reverse works good 1/2 way to floor.
Motor is ez to start,no drag, doesent stall or buck when driving.
What do I need to adjust now? I changed the band because they were 60 years old.

The brake should not stop the motor. Do you have a free neutral with the aux tranny in gear? If, with the aux tranny in neutral, the brake stops the engine, then something is dragging, either low band, reverse band, or high speed clutch.

The low pedal is adjusted too tight. It needs to engage as close to the floor as possible. 2" from the floor is too tight.

I don't think that would cause any noise though.

I do have free netural with aux in gear.
But..the enging drags when trying to start, knock in neutral ans she spins over ez!

That proves the bands are adjusted too tight if you have to place the aux trans in neutral to crank.

"That proves the bands are adjusted too tight if you have to place the aux trans in neutral to crank."
Are we reading different threads? I do not see where he stated that the aux needs to be in neutral to crank, but the reverse..."I do have free netural with aux in gear."

Fred; I too had a squeal after putting new bands in and it turned out that I had the front band "cocked" forward on the bottom and it was rubbing on the drum flange. Even in oil it squealed. Good luck.

I'm still confused about "Brake will stop the motor 1/2 way to floor (to tight) and wont go down anymore." The brake drum is essentially connected to the rear wheels if your aux tranny is in gear. If the car is not rolling, the brake drum is not turning. Stepping on the brake pedal should not kill the engine. Now, if your aux tranny is in neutral the brake drum would turn if the clutch or either of the other two bands were too tight. Under these circumstances, using the brake would tend to stop the engine. So I am confused.

At any rate, Low and Brake should both tighten the band JUST BEFORE the pedal hits the floor. Say...maybe an inch off the floor. Reverse is a little harder to judge, but the same theory applies. Loose as you can have it without it slipping.

I talked to one of my longtime friends this morning who loves Model T's and spent alot of time working on them with the late John Adams. He agrees with what has been said here....Bands are too tight and hes going to look at it.
Im self taught on this T stuff, books and this Forum and listening to people have helped me alot. I would have had a T 30 years ago,but the understanding of the Transmission/coils/timer kept me away from it. Not anymore,I love these old T's!!
Thanks everyone.

Heck, the transmission, the ignition system, and the lack of pumps is what I find most interesting about the T. Those three things are the first thing some want to change. They are what makes a T a T, in my opinion. I already had an A for when I think I need shift levers, distributors and water and oil pumps.

Dive into it Fred. It ain't complicated, just different. You've already replaced the bands. Sounds like it just needs an adjustment. Dive in head first. You'll be an expert in no time. I promise.

I would pitch the kevlar or whatever is in there, and put in wood band liners.

Fred,

When you put new band material on the old bands, did you make sure the material followed the curve of the band and did not go straight from rivet to rivet? Are the ends of the rivets clinched back into the material on the inside of the bands?

Thomas,I got all of that right, and rechecked it.

Hal thats what I did ...just dive in. Last summer I fixed 3 stuck valves, cut new seats, and time the valves the KR wilson way, rewire the truck, send coils off, play with timer. 1/2 crank no choke and she fires up every time!
Im getting ready to start my 21 T in a couple of weeks.
