A favorite destination for old car tours was recently destroyed by fire. Arson is suspected. The White's Bridge, near Belding, Michigan, was the oldest covered bridge still in use in the state.

Sad. Very sad, that people can be that short-sighted and selfish.
The Wikipedia link above opens with a paragraph about the bridge being destroyed by fire on July 7, 2013. The rest of the article has not yet been updated and is written in "present-tense".
Drive carefully, and enjoy, W2

Too bad, I instantly recognize that bridge from several films which, I now know, had scenes filmed there. Too bad.

There is the world's longest covered bridge right here in Nevada County (near Wayne Sheldon). Also a popular tourist destination, it was recently fenced off due to a finding that it is no longer structurally sound and the state does not wish to throw the necessary money at it to keep it standing.

Terry there used to be a bunch of covered bridges in Nevada County and Sierra County. We used them on cattle drives. I don't know which one but one was on old highway 49 and the wagon boss would only let us drive 8 cattle across at a time because it was not to stable. If the bridge in your picture has little rooms on the side over the river. I stayed in one of the rooms on one of the cattle drives. All the rooms had was an iron bed with no mattress. We just unrolled our sleeping bags and slept on the old beds. There was a big corral on the far side of the bridge that we kept the cattle and horses in for the night. One of the ranches was the Robinson Ranch in Penn Valley.

Dave it's a state park now. The little out buildings and barn are still there. They were restoring the old filling station there before Gov. Brown pulled the plug on state parks.

The pictured bridge has been preserved over the last 100 years and has been open for foot traffic the whole 30 years I've been here... until now. The plan is to let it rot and fall into the river as a public demonstration of how we should have been paying more taxes. That's ok with our gvm't as the replacement bridge you can see behind the covered bridge takes less maintenance.

The burned bridge was only about a half hour from my place. Lucky to have two more within an hours drive. This is from a car club tour with a picture of my 55 Crown Vic. just as we were coming off the bridge.
