Guys: I have a loose steering case on a car. Need to tighten up the rivets in the tube. Has anyone done this by themselves? Need a way to back up the rivet, hold the punch and swing the hammer. May be take out floorboards and a bar down to the frame or floor??? Thanks, Dan.
Remove the rivets and use the reamer made for a #2 taper pin, ream the hole one by one and fit the pins to where you like them. They tap in nice and perfectly tight.Did my column this way,it was described in the T repair book and it is by far the best way to resecure the column. Also if you had to dissassemble for whatever reason, you can knock them back out.I have a bunch of those pins and the reamer,PM me if you like!
Dan, your column tube is also very likely cracked. I would pull the column and go through it. It would also be much easier to install new rivets with the column out of the car.
