I hope all are Model T friends in New Zealand are OK. Just read they had a 6.5 quake near Wellington.
Sounds like they got away with only 4 serious injuries (no deaths.) They are asking for people to stay away from the City centre until all inspections have been made.
We felt it here in Napier but only as a gentle sway; not enough to spill my beer.
I felt it in Feilding (about 2 hours north of Wellington) I was actually driving my T -I was waiting for a break in traffic to turn out of my street- Suddenly the whole car rocked back and forth about 10 times - I thought some one was behind me rocking the car as a joke and even looked in the mirror to see who it was !. My son is a law student in Wellington and says it was some jolt - He tells me the law library (His second home) is a heck of a mess with books every where on the ground
Thanks for asking Dennis.
There had been a few smaller shakes over the preceding days, so people were almost expecting something larger.
There's lots of stories on the internet so I won't bore you with that. Suffice to say, we were in the car (Toyota Corolla - a modern Model T!) in downtown Wellington and I happened to be looking subconsciously at a woman on the sidewalk who suddenly stumbled and lost her balance. Michelle thought the car had gone up onto the kerb - the car was rolling on its suspension. We realised it was an earthquake and stopped. We could see the top of a skyscraper right in front of us swaying (as they're supposed to in an earthquake) as though it was a tree in a gentle breeze. Awesome, but very frightening.
We expect it's not over yet (we've not heard the fat lady hasn't sing yet!).
Best wishes,
John Stokes
