Model T Ford Forum: Forum 2013: Questions about antique vehicles for hire

I was approached last week end ,while stopped at a yard sale, by a young couple who thought using the T in weddings or other special events would be a good way to make extra cash. This was something I had been thinking about doing in the distant future when I retire. My thought was to have several antique vehicles both open and enclosed for hire like a limo service. I know that doing this would require a business licence and specific insurance for this type of work. The other option I was considering was a business that arranges for private individuals/local AACA club members to perform limo type services with their antique vehicles. I'm sure there are many more aspects to doing this that I'm not aware of. Has anyone/does anyone on the forum have experience with an antique car livery service business and what are the pitfalls. What things should private individuals who want to rent out themselves and their vehicles do to be legal and protected?

Two visits are required before you go far down this path - check with a knowledgeable insurance agent and a good lawyer. I've done a couple weddings for friends and family but never take any fee and am quite selective about who I will take. Most regular insurance coverage won't handle "for hire" operation.

That's an interesting concept, Chester. Overcome the insurance hurdle and you'll have a winner.

More to it than that.To drive for hire you need a CDL with health card. Then your T im shure will have to meet current laws and standards.Bud.

Check with your state and local government. I doubt that you will need a CDL (Commercial Driver's License). You may get by with a Chauffer's license if required by your city.

As an example, here's the rule in Texas:

/quote{There is no statewide chauffeur license code to follow. Like taxis, chauffeur driver licenses vary with each district. Some may not require a special license, whereas other districts, such as Houston, mandate strict requirements. Check with your local government.}

Here's another: I didn't get the quote correct before but it's straight from the Texas License site.

quote:

A CDL is not required if the shuttle van or bus you're operating is designed for 15 passengers or less.

It's not unusual for limousine companies to have a few antiques in their fleet. These generally date no further back than the 1930s and I suppose that's for all-weather comfort and safety reasons.

Here's the antique page from the website of a limo company in my neighborhood:

The biggest hurdle is insurance. None of the antique auto insurance companies will cover commercial use of your antique vehicle. I have had discussions with Hagerty over this and they are the best shot we have for "limited commercial use". What I wanted to be able to do was to take people for rides like at HFM but only on special events with an insurance certificate for the show day only and only over a prescribed (perhaps totally off road) route. They still say "no way" but they are willing to talk about it. I have been asked many times to do a wedding day ride from church to reception hall kind of thing but only did it for my family and it was not a commercial use. I tell young folks never to offer money to any antique car person but just ask if they might consider giving the young couple a ride form the church and then to make a donation to their club AFTER the event is over. If there is no discussion of a fee before hand there is no foul or at least none that can be pointed at but if you talk about a fee at all beforehand then it is a commercial use and you are driving uninsured. Been there in this discussion many times as president of local chapter and as a board member of the MTFCI. There simply is no better "fund raiser" that a club can have than to give Model T rides and even though the funds might go 100% into our youth foundation - there is still no way they will do it. I think they feel it opens up a door that they will never get closed again.

I have Hagerty Insurance. I called them and they have what is called a special event rider for hiring out to movie sets etc. Low cost. They let me drive a wedding party on my insurance since I took no fee but the wedding made a donation to our Boy scout Troop... Get insurance and a good lawyer before you do this on a regular basis

All I say on this subject is "DON'T DO IT" It becomes a big liability also a rental. People don't give a rats ass if they break or scratch something in your car mainly they rented it from you & if you have an car accident or they slip and fell onto or off your car they be calling their lawyer..

Chester
Isn't there a company near Yosemite that you can rent a T from and you drive it? You might want to check with them as to how they do it.

Bob

Then you have to compete with the local "mob" who are running all the limo companies. At least that's how it's done around here.

I worked with a guy from Viet Nam that wanted to help others from that country resettle in America.

He bought an 8 passenger van to pick up new arrivals at the airport.

Then he found he had to have an annual inspection from a Federal Group, seems like it was FTC or some initials similar that. He also had to get a Maryland licence to carry passengers, similar to a taxi or limo license. He had to have the license numbers painted on his vehicle, which made it difficult to just drive to work and go through a gate to park on government property, where he worked.

He dropped the whole idea after one year and spending far more than he earned for his help.

Yes, the "Tin Lizzy Inn" will rent you a T or an A to tour through Yosemite--it's a great fun thing to do! They have a website, so Google it.
