This is not a Smith but a similar set-up on my Maxwell conversion. It has a good sized drum bolted to the rear sprocket.

Charley,
I used to have a Muncie overdrive/underdrive on my T (with auxilliary brakes). You quickly find that when you gear up for high speeds you cut the braking efficiency. Likewise when you gear down you increase braking with that tranny brake.

These truck conversions increase the final ratio. You would expect that the braking would be significantly improved.

Your question about that being adequate is still a good one, however.
