I painted my frame with POR-15. Stays looking nice and never rusts. Do it while you have the car apart. Painting upside down while laying on the floor is not fun.

Do you have to prime before using POR-15? Or is it primer and paint in one? Can it be brushed on and still look good?

Paint while apart and touchup as you assemble. I used POR 15 on my TT frame, spring leaves, axles, and running boards in 1999 and it's still good--the top of the diamonds on the running boards have never worn through. The ones I've painted wore through quickly. My 15 that I finished last year had the entire undercarriage and runningboards powdercoated--holding up well so far, but, only time will tell. The powdercoating cleans up like wiping out a Teflon frying pan.
