The saga continues. Got all of the drums apart. another one of the drums has a crack in the webing of the drums and then on the reverse drum, the pins or rivets that hold the drum to the shaft are loose. Can these be tightened up or is this whole drum just junk now? If it is useable, how is it fixed?

Ned, it would be better to replace the rivets rather than try to re-set them. Drill them out one at a time and fit the new ones as you go. New rivets will take up any wear in the components caused by the looseness in operation. Some will set them cold. I prefer to hot rivet them.

Hope this helps.

Ned,
Allan and Herm are right, I am just willing to add, the cracked drums are Junk, don't try to weld or repair them they will come apart wail running. Replace them by new or good used ones.
Good luck

Cracked drums, especially if the cracks are relatively minor, can be welded. The problem is that almost nobody welds them correctly. It just concerns me that too many repairable drums are sent out for scrap and they are getting more difficult to find.
Allen and Herm are right about replacing the rivets.
Drive carefully, and enjoy, W2

As Andre said do not try and fix cracked drums. If you weld it it is just going to crack again next to the weld. A lot of very bad and expensive things can happen if that drum should fling apart. The risk is not worth it.

Wayne,

Technically, you're correct. However, the chances of finding a good and trusted welder are sketchy at best, (as you say). If Ned had stated that he's been a certified welder for the past 25 years, yours might be good advice. However, the best advice for 99% of folks is, find better, or new, drums.

Well Jerry, I'm only 23 so welding these are out of the question i guess haha. The cracks in the two that are cracked are pretty bad. I will not be using them. Luckily the brake drum which is a 26-27 is not cracked but only loose and needs new rivets. Hopefully this will be the last thing to have done before putting back together. This project has taken way longer than I expected. Thanks again everyone
